A-Z Skirt Types

A skirt is a term used in fashion for an item of clothing worn from the waist down. Today, it has become an essential element of any woman’s or girl’s wardrobe and is considered a must-have.

There are many styles of skirts available in all brands. While styles come and go with the seasons, the silhouettes remain the same.

Different Skirt Lengths

Different Skirt Styles

There are varying skirt lengths and they are:

  • Micro: Thigh-length
  • Mini: Usually above the knee
  • Knee Length: Sits at the knee
  • Below the knee: Just below the knee
  • Midi: Calf length
  • Maxi: Below the calf length

Nowadays, the fashion sense is very important. You need good shirts to match with your skirts in order to look more cool and elegant. you need to follow the fashion trends by following the good celebrities like Tom Cruise, Eminem, Juice Wrld, Angelina Jolie etc. You can get some fashion sense of good shirts here: https://juicewrldmerchandise.net/shirts/

FitEyes on March 25, 2020:

The clothes you wear are fashion: skirts, rugs, shirts, caps, blouses, sweaters, coats and more. Style just doesn't give you a look–it gives you something to throw on, that's either very in nature or more formal style (down shirts with the button, trousers, blazers and a skirt).

This makes an huge difference. What are you wearing and how are you wearing it? The mode of clothing is that it is a beautiful wool blazer with a jean pair or a sweater of jeans paired with a baby sundress.

I love researching bridal fashion trends from around the world.

Bridal lehenga

Gorgeous Modern Bridal Sarees, Lehenga and Shararas

A wedding is one of the most highly anticipated and special days in a woman’s life. As in many areas of the world, bridal attire is extravagant in a Southeast Asian wedding. As the event nears, though, it can become more and more difficult for the soon-to-be bride to decide what to wear.

The brides of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan traditionally wear sarees, lehenga, shararas, and it's becoming more common for more gown-type dresses at their weddings. These gowns have intricate designs using traditional zari work, stonework, zardozi and other embellishments.

For centuries, red has been the predominant colour for bridal wear in these regions, but the latest trends include a greater variety of styles and colours. Bright colours were traditionally preferred for being a sign of happiness, but pale colours and pastels are becoming more popular.

What Do Brides Wear in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan?

Bangladesh

Brides of Bangladesh traditionally wear wedding sarees in shades of red. But the bridal scene in Bangladesh is changing, and lehengas, shararas and even fusions of western and eastern wedding gowns can be seen adorning the brides of Bangladesh. They traditionally wear a lehenga with a long blouse that covers the stomach area.

India

Historically, brides of different regions of India wear different attire. Brides of Bengali origin, in Kolkata and South India, wear sarees at their weddings. While brides from more metropolitan areas like Bombay often wear lehengas at their weddings. Indian brides tend to pair wedding lehengas with short blouses that reveal the midriff and navel of the bride.

Pakistan

Pakistani brides generally wear gorgeous bridal shararas (a type of lehenga with a long upper blouse) or heavily embellished knee-length or longer salwar kameez at their wedding.

Different Styles of Lehenga Skirts

A lehenga is three separate pieces of clothing: the skirt, the blouse and the dupatta (a big shawl-like piece of material that drapes over the head of the bride).

A bridal lehenga comes in different shapes nowadays; it is no longer just a skirt with lots of gathering. Lehenga skirts come in the following shapes:

  • Traditional Circle-Cut: These are flowing and voluminous skirts. They are lovely on brides of medium build and height. Full skirts generally look more "bridal" than narrow or mermaid-cut skirts and have more options for embellishment due to the amount of exposed fabric.
  • Straight-Cut: These skirts fall straight from the waist to the hemline at the feet.
  • A-Cut: As the name suggests, these skirts are in the shape of an “A.” They are narrow at the waist and wide at the bottom; much like a traditional ball gown. They create a beautiful silhouette.
  • Mermaid-Cut: Mermaid-cut bridal lehengas are popular in bridal couture, and they look exceptionally gorgeous on tall and fit brides. These skirts create a very sexy, hourglass silhouette.

Fabrics and Embellishments Used to Make Bridal Lehenga

Lehengas are made with a variety of fabrics such as net, chiffon, georgette, silk and even velvet. Velvet skirts have recently become more popular in bridal couture because of the rich shades of colour that can only be achieved in velvet material.

What makes these skirts even more beautiful is the intricate designs on the fabric itself. Bridal lehengas are heavily embellished with beads, sequins, stonework, patchwork, and traditional zardozi work and zari embroidery.

How to Style a Skater Skirt

The skater skirt is a favorite item in colleges, schools, and campuses. With ideas of what to wear with a skater skirt, you can style it for any occasion. Fashioning this outfit depends on selecting the best top and accessories. These skirts can be trendy for all seasons!

Sneak Peak

Here I will discuss all aspects of wearing a skater skirt, including:

  1. Types of Skater Skirt
  2. Skirt Lengths
  3. How to Style Tops
  4. How to Style Leggings
  5. Shoes to Wear
  6. Dressing for Winter
  7. Dressing for Summer
  8. Bonus Tip

1. What Is a Skater Skirt?

Skater skirts come in three basic styles:

  • Pleated: Pleated skater skirts are available in a variety of pleat styles. These include box, knife, and micro pleats.
  • A-line: A-line skater skirts are wide with a gentle flare.
  • Circle: A circle skater skirt is flowy and bound to bounce with your cadence and the wind. If you are visiting a windy area, you should choose a heavy material like leather or a denim skater skirt.

2. Skater Skirt Fit

A general rule of thumb: Whatever the style, most ladies will find wide waistbands to be more comfortable than thin ones.

Mid-Length Skater Skirts

Skater skirts are typically worn knee-length to mid-thigh length. This is because they are styled as a street fashion for the daring lady. They are also popular in clubs and at parties. Girls who fancy mini skirts will find pencil skirts to be monotonous compared to a skater skirt.

Short Skater Skirts

The ideal length of the skirt depends on the occasion and personal taste, but try to avoid wearing a skater skirt that is too short. Test if it falls below your index finger when standing straight. This is especially important with billowy styles. If you want to wear your skater skirt to work, opt for knee-lengths.

Does Size Matter?

Plus size ladies can style a skater skirt by wearing it knee-length or just above the knee. The same goes for short ladies. For thin people, wearing a long shirt and a low belt over it can emphasize the hips. Attires with flared mini skirts seem to exaggerate the bottoms of even thin women.

One Way to Dress Up a Skirt

3. What Top to Wear With a Skater Skirt

The best and most preferred tops to wear with a skater skirt are:

  • Crop tops: Any crop top that is not so revealing is great. Because skater skirts are mostly worn waist-high, they pair well with crop tops.
  • Form-fitting Tees: Accentuating your figure adds to the drama of the skirt volume and is very flattering.
  • V-necks: V-necks draw attention to your midline and thus, the shape around your midline. Pronounce your curves by wearing a V-neck!
  • Scoop necks: Scoop necks have a similar effect as V-necks, except they balance out an hour-glass figure.
  • Avoid: Avoid off-the-shoulder tops. They tend to imbalance your outfit.

Styling Your Chosen Shirt (Plus Some Unconventional Styling Tips)

Tucking in your top is a matter of personal choice, depending on how high you wear your skirt and the length of the top. Some tops like camisoles and tee shirts may be too long for your style. Here are some tips for different shirt styles:

  • Always compare how the top looks when tucked in and untucked.
  • A button-up shirt that falls to your hip may be nice even if it is not tucked in.
  • If the top looks ridiculous when tucked, consider wearing a blazer, cardigan, sweater or jacket over it. A denim jacket is also wonderful with a skater skirt or dress.

Patterns Vs. Solid Skater Skirts

Here's a guide for pairing colors with patterns when wearing a skater skirt:

  • If you choose to wear a floral skirt, go for a solid top.
  • If your skirt is neutral, choose a print top. A metallic silver or gold shirt or tee is also fabulous.
  • You can also choose to go monochromatic. If you do choose to wear this way, opt for colors that are neither too bright nor too dark.
  • Conversely, you can add any color blazer-skirt suit and a blouse in another color for accent. For instance, you can wear a black skirt, black jacket, and a white camisole or shirt.

Masculine Accessories for a Feminine Look

Because of the femininity of the skater skirt, you can get away with wearing masculine tops. If you fancy the idea of wearing men’s shirts, opt for a longer skirt. Male shirts, if possible sleeveless, are some of the best tops for long skater skirts. Even so, this outfit is not good for bulky women. Ladies with big hips look good with a top that does not go further than the hip. If you must wear a coat or jacket that is longer than the skirt, avoid buttoning.

Is Makeup an Accessory? Yes!

Your accessories and makeup mean a lot to your look. Even a good outfit accessorized in a way bad can look outrageous. If you wear a bold hairstyle, lipstick or jewelry, go for a skirt in neutral colors. Simple accessories bring a good outcome if your clothes are bright.

Your clutch bag can match either with your skirt or top. Else, try a bag in a color close to your shoes. Most importantly, take the mirror test before going out. If you look good to yourself, you will look great to others and you deserve to be confident. You will be glad that you chose the best clothes and accessories to wear with your skater skirt.

4. What Leg-Coverage to Wear With a Skater Skirt

Let's be honest; skater skirts can be paired with pants, leggings, or tights. Leg coverage gives you the freedom to wear skaters in a modest way. Tights are essential additions to skater skirt outfits for winter.

Sheer Legwear

Toned pantyhose with skater outfits are particularly conservative and can be sexy as well. Long socks can look great. Skater skirts look amazingly youthful paired with knee-high socks and above-the-knee skater skirts. Pro tip? Always watch the colors of your clothes to avoid clashing.

Tights Are A Practical Accessory

Sally via Flickr

Opaque Legwear

For a more conservative look, you can wear your skater skirt with opaque legwear. These can be tights, leggings or skinny jeans. Complete the outfit with ankle or mid-calf boots.

To look sexier but still modest, choose nude shoes and hosiery. If you like, go for fishnet leggings over toned tights. A laced hemline is also sexy.

Layers, Layers, Layers!

During the winter, layering your skater skirt or other mini skirts with pantyhose is a must. When the weather is too cold, you can layer two pairs of leggings or tights to keep you warmer. A pair of cushioned boots will do the rest.

Shoes and Tights?

The best shoes to wear with tights and skater skirts are closed-toe varieties. Sneakers, pumps, and boots of any height are okay. Heeled boots or pumps are ideal for adding height. Consider wearing thick socks, two pairs of tights or knee-high boots if the weather is very bad. If you must wear casual, strappy or open shoes, opt for leggings instead.

Any season is the season for skirts when you have the correct accessories.

Flickr

5. What Shoes to Wear with a Skater Skirt

Shoes to pair with a skater skirt should be attractive, fashionable, and comfortable. Wearing a skater skirt is about making the legs and waist focal points. The best types of shoes for this outfit are those that reveal your legs. This does not mean you can’t use leg-wear items like pantyhose.

Boots

Boots will generally go well with skater and other mini skirts or dresses. They are a great pairing in winter as you can layer them with tights or leggings. Use any length boots so long as they do not disagree with the style of your other clothes.

  • Combat boots create a care-free and tough look.
  • Over the knee boots look great if the hemline leaves some margin from the top of the boot.
  • Ankle boots are fabulous with A-line outfits.
  • Lace-up boots pair well with patterned or printed skirts.

Boots can seem to shorten and thicken the legs. They are therefore a good match for tall or slender ladies. Short or petite women can add height with platform boots.

Sneakers

Sneakers create a cool and distinctive look with skater outfits. They are perfect with casual, short clothing; they tend to dress an outfit down. These include mini dresses or skirts.

Sneakers pair well with leggings. They let you mix colors and patterns in any way you like. You can create different styles no matter whether your skirt is pleated or circular.

  • If your skirt is neutral or dark, try to choose colored sneakers.
  • For a patterned skirt, try dark, neutral or white sneakers.
  • If you have long or slim legs, go for converse high tops. They reduce your leg-line and make your legs look shorter and thicker.
  • Ladies with medium to thick legs should wear low tops with skater skirts. These shoes make legs appear thinner and taller.
Sandals add length to any leg.

Flickr

Heels

Heels are cute on short and petite ladies regardless of the clothing they wear. Lace-up heels are particularly suitable for parties and dinners. For a club, you can wear spiked pumps although they might look odd and cheap at other events. Platform pumps look fabulous for many occasions especially if you have wide legs.

Flats

Flats are nice with skater skirts for casual wear, particularly in summer. They look best if they closely match your skin tone. You can wear them low or high heeled depending on your situation. If the weather is hot, opt for flat sandals or other strappy footwear. If you want to elongate your legs with flats, you can select pointy-toe varieties.

Stay warm in winter by layering up!

6. Wearing a Skater Skirt In the Winter Season

During the winter, skater skirts can be very uncomfortable if not layered well. In these months, wear your skirt with tights or thick leggings. The best shirts for this season are long-sleeved. Adding layers also add warmth. Cardigans and sweaters can be tucked-in to add warmth and emphasize the high waist.

In the winter, thick clothes are important. Wearing so many layers is not ideal. Choose warm and preferably long-sleeved clothing. Use a scarf and a warm headgear if necessary. Wearing socks under a skater skirt or dress is also acceptable if they agree with the outfit.

Accessories in Winter

Accessories for a skater skirt and tights outfit include gloves, necklaces and a bag. Use simple jewelry and a shoulder or cross-body bag for accent. Carry a bag big enough for putting some clothes in case the weather changes.

What do you wear with a black skater skirt?

Flickr

Dark-Colored Skater Skirts are Best for Special Occasions and . . . You Guessed it: Winter!

A black or dark skater skirt brings a lot of options. Almost any outfit idea can work. The idea is to add colors, styles, and textures to jazz up your skirt. Although you can pair a black skater skirt with any color clothes or accessories, brighter colors are more pronounced and look better. The design and material of your skirt are also worth consideration.

Dress Up Your Black Skater Skirt

A black skirt suit is fabulous if accentuated with other colors. You can put on such an outfit for business or work if the skirt is not too short. If you must wear black shoes with this attire, and again, spice it up by choosing bright accessories. For instance, you could leave the blazer unbuttoned to reveal a white tank or camisole underneath. Should you want to button the jacket, use light makeup or a statement necklace. It is nice to make sure that the blazer/jacket does not hide too much of the camisole.

Wearing a black skirt and a black top (like a vest or blouse) amounts to wearing a black dress. You should dress up this outfit as you would your black dresses. A simple way of styling this setup is to wear shoes and a jacket in the same color. For instance, you could wear both a green jacket and shoes. Mixing colors is okay if they do not clash.

When selecting the clothes to wear with your black skater skirt for a party or night out, consider the theme of the event. Such occasions will normally have a specific dress code. If there is no exact dress code, think of what others are likely to wear. Do not overdo on anything or you might end up feeling lost.

Wearing black from head to toe in the winter is acceptable in most scenarios. But you can still add some spice by having at least one item in another color. A colorful necklace or scarf is adequate in jazzing up your ensemble.

A patterned skater skirt is the perfect summer outfit.

Flickr

7. Wearing a Skater Skirt in the Summer

During the summer, choose light-weight tops in bright colors. Avoid long sleeves unless you can balance with fancy leggings or tights. You can wear lighter varieties in summer to fashion your clothes. Pair with casual tops like lace or crop tops for warm weather, and layers in chilly conditions.

Casual Accessories

For casual wear, or in warmer weather, you can choose printed tops and sandals. A denim jacket can also look amazing. Such pairing goes well during the summer. If you like a classic look, pick a striped top. For a simpler look, put on toned shoes and a neutral top. A blue tank top or button shirt will do. When it’s not too hot, a plaid top will pair well especially with a circle or pleated skirt.

How to Color Match

To wear mixed colors, have a theme in mind. For instance, if your theme is blue, you could wear clothes with shades of blue, green and purple. Otherwise, mix in neutral colors like brown boots with black tights, grey skater skirt, blue or black cardigan, white shirt and a scarf in one of those colors. Remember the focus will be mainly on your legs and mini skirt.

8. BONUS: What to Wear With a Leather Skater Skirt

A leather skater skirt is a statement in and of itself. Pairing it with overly sexy tops creates an exaggerated look. Choose modest tops for a cute and stylish outcome. The idea is to balance the hardness of the skirt with a softer, feminine touch.

Wear your skirt with a neutral button shirt and pumps or boots for a classic look. For layering, add a cropped blazer or sweater. Use stylish accessories like metallic necklaces, earrings, and a bracelet to complete the outfit.

How to Wear a Leather Skirt . . . Modestly

For a more modest look, choose a turtleneck and ankle boots, or lace-up boots with a T-shirt. Try your skater mini skirt with a lace blouse in bright colors. To make the outfit more refined, choose fancy, feminine heels. You can also add more female niceties like florals, tie front or ruffles.

Add Laid-Back Fabrics

To create a trendy look, choose a laid-back pairing. Try a cropped sweatshirt, patterned tee or a denim shirt. Add some fun by tucking in or tying a knot at your belly. Pair with boots or flats. Sneakers will also go well with this outfit.

Leather Lovers Beware

Avoid wearing leather skater skirts with leather jackets and boots. The look is too masculine. If you must pair this way, use highly feminine accessories like simple but elaborate makeup, hair adornments, necklace, earrings, and a large bag.

How to Style a Leather Skirt

A leather skirt is one of the hardest skirts to style. Without good fashion ideas, wearing this style staple can make you look hopeless. This fashion guide will help you find the best ways to style it, whether you are going for a humble look or want to make a hot impression.

But first, you have to choose the type of leather skirt that suits your personality and the occasion to which it will be worn. This means selecting the right length and design. Some ladies may opt for midi lengths, but the majority of girls—especially those who are street fashion conscious—will definitely choose the mini. It depends on the occasion, and whether you want a professional, feminine, sexy, or tough look. For business or conservative wear, choose a skirt that is knee-length or longer. You can also wear tights or stockings underneath.

Leather Skirt Styles

Design

Leather skirt styles include pencil, circle, and pleated. You can wear it either high-waist or low-waist. If you want a midi leather skirt, opt for it in a pencil style. Those who prefer short skirts will most likely prefer the pleated or circular ones. For the midi length, choose a material that is lightweight. You can choose one with slits to reveal some skin either at the front, back, or sides.

Color

Contrary to popular belief, you can get a leather skirt in almost any color. But, black ones are easier to style as they go well with almost all color tops. Experiment with a variety of colors and see which one works for you.

Flickr

What Tops to Wear With a Leather Skirt

To select the best tops to wear with a leather skirt, first consider the style of your outfit.

  • A pencil skirt is better paired with a loose-fitting top.
  • A pleated or skater style goes well with a form-fitting top.
  • You might not look stylish if you wear leather or denim jackets with leather skirts or dresses. If you must wear such an outfit, check the mirror!
  • You can wear almost any color top with a dark leather skirt, but colored skirts require some discretion to ensure they pair well.
  • Generally, a white, cream, or ivory collared shirt will look perfect with a black leather skirt.

Tops for Each Occasion

  • For evenings, parties, clubs, and street fashion, a pleated black skirt and a colorful feminine top will do.
  • To look girlish, choose feminine colors, lace, embellishments, or accessorize with jewelry.
  • For a tough appearance, try a dark skirt and a tight top with combat shoes.
  • Should you want to appear super sexy, wear a short skirt and a long shirt or T-shirt. Also, try a sheer top, V-neck, or sleeveless blouse.
  • For conservative or office wear, try to keep matters simple. Opt for a knee-length skirt or accessorize with leggings, tights, or stockings. Pair with a modest top or use a long blazer or cardigan. A blazer with just one button fastened at the waist can really pull the look together.
  • During the winter and fall, layer your tops with a trench coat, cardigan, or jumper.
  • In the summer, opt for brighter and more lightweight tops.

Flickr

What Shoes to Wear With a Leather Skirt

The types of shoes you wear will be determined by the event you plan to attend. Matching the color of your footwear and the skirt is not required. Note that if you must wear knee-length leather boots, be sure that the style suits you.

  • For casual outings, wear simple shoes like flats or sports shoes.
  • For more feminine fashion, choose decorative sandals or other heeled shoes. These are also cute for summer.
  • Sneakers are great for a night out.
  • For a conservative look or for office/business meetings, avoid platform shoes. Just put on a pair of classic pumps, ankle boots, or pointed-toe flats.
  • Plus-size women and petites will look amazing in nude shoes.
  • Wearing all black from head to toe exhibits a tough appearance. If you go for this look but want to break up the monotony, you can accentuate with a handbag, a V-neck with a camisole in another color, a necklace, or a scarf. You can also wear a blazer and then wear a shirt with sleeves that are longer than the blazer's sleeves.
  • In winter and fall, choose warm footwear like lined boots, and wear them with thick socks.

Flickr

What to Wear With a Leather Pencil Skirt

A leather pencil skirt is ideal for plus-size ladies, office wear, and conservative women who like modest but stylish clothes. These kinds of skirts are better paired with a top that is not so fitting, so as to provide contrast. The correct length and size can flatter any figure.

  • For work, leather pencil skirts are best worn knee-length or longer. You can pair it with any top that is not revealing, such as a buttoned blouse or lace top.
  • A midi pencil style goes well with tops that are left untucked. If you like, you can also layer with a blazer or wool jacket. If this is the case, then you can tuck in the blouse.
  • Shoes will, again, depend on the occasion. You may try heels or ankle/knee-length boots.
  • If you are going to a party or a night-out dance, follow the dress code. For additional comfort, use a stretch leather skirt.

Flickr

What to Wear With a Leather Skirt on a Night Out

Wearing a leather skirt for a night out can be stylish and sexy. Although knee-length or shorter would be perfect for the occasion, any style and length will do. Even a mid-calf pencil style can be sexy if it has a simple slit. It is not as complicated dressing for a night out occasion.

Tops

  • Tops that work for this look include crop tops, sleeveless, spaghetti camisoles, and scoop-neck tees.
  • If you prefer a more layered style, you can go with a sweater, blazer, or jacket.
  • For a sexier look, opt for a brief top and a low-waist skirt, or a nude-toned top tucked in. You can also wear full-sleeve or collard shirts with a knee-length skirt.
  • Floral tops look good for dancing.

What you wear underneath your skirt is bent on the style and length of your gown, and where you are going out.

  • You might want to wear leggings, tights, or stockings. These can be fishnet, embellished, or nude varieties.
  • Some ladies opt for toned leather pants under a mini leather skirt.
  • For shoes, choose knee-high boots, peep-toe stilettos, or sexy heels.
  • Use a belt over the skirt or top to balance out the outfit.

Can You Wear a Black Leather Skirt in Summer?

Wearing a black leather skirt in summer is possible, depending on the activities you are going to be involved in, how hot the weather is, and the time of day. If you are visiting a windy area or horse or bike riding, it will be okay. Should you find that the skirt is bound to be uncomfortable, avoid wearing it. Don't dress to impress only to suffer discomfort in silence. Also, avoid wearing leather when the weather is hot.

Style and Material

  • For a better experience, choose a lightweight, high-waisted skirt with a silk or cotton lining. If it is not lined, you may consider wearing a cotton underskirt to keep you cooler.
  • A faux leather material is perfect because it is breathable.
  • A skater or circle skirt will allow for more ventilation.
  • A pencil skirt may cling and could make you extra hot, so a flowy style is more preferable in the summer.

Tops

  • Go for light materials, bright colors, and styles that are not too dressy. Turtle or full-neck tops are not appropriate.
  • Think V-neck, low-cut, or sheer crop tops.
  • A print shirt or combo top in brilliant colors will keep off the heat.
  • A white T-shirt may be the ideal top to pair with your skirt.
  • Avoid tucking in your top and steer clear of dark-colored ones.
  • In short, what you wear should be loose, light, and bright.
Ideal for a night out

Flickr

Accessorizing

  • Always remember that leather skirts go better with silver jewelry than with gold.
  • If you want to wear all leather from head to toe, accessorize with masculine footwear, a big bag, neutral makeup, and a simple hairstyle.
  • Choose the right texture of leather skirts and dresses.

I'd urge you to start by selecting an outfit that is light-weight. The faux leather varieties are great for people who've never worn leather before. Otherwise, real leather may be too bulky for you.

How to Style a Maxi Skirt

The maxi skirt is perhaps the most comfortable, flattering, and versatile piece of women’s clothing, but not the easiest one to style. Even though it's trendy, making the wrong choices can take away from their glamour. The style you choose and how you wear your long skirt can make a big difference. But with these tips, even the plainest maxi can look amazing.

The correct length of a maxi skirt depends on your height. At its shortest, it should hit a couple of inches above the ankle. Extra long maxis can be floor-length or barely touching the toenails. To ensure ease of walking, avoid floor-sweeping skirts. When trying one on, walk with your normal stride to see if it's comfortable.

Maxi skirts can be worn for work, casual, formal, street fashion, maternity, and even as modesty wear. Styles include flowy, form-fitting, pleated, circular, A-line, and slitted. You can wear a maxi skirt either low on the waist or high-waisted. They come in a variety of fabrics, though most women prefer the more fashionable soft feminine materials of chiffon and satin. Colors range from solids to prints and patterns.

Styling a maxi skirt involves the proper blending of colors and styles. Wearing a maxi skirt by day entails simple and neutral pairing. However, you can choose bright and stunning tops and accessories in warm weather. For a night out, pair with fashionable and attractive tops and accessories. You can match up with checked and simple colors for business occasions, small prints for formal events, and anything goes when going casual.

Who Can Wear Maxi Skirts?

Petites and plus sizes sometimes fear wearing long skirts as they can make them look dwarfy or overwhelmed. But the right styling tricks can create a taller and leaner look. Here are some good silhouettes for different body types.

  • Short ladies who want to appear taller should wear darker colored skirts and brighter tops to appear taller.
  • A halter or V-neck top paired with a skirt in vertical stripes is also elongating.
  • You can also add a broad belt and high heels for more height.
  • For the best outcome, opt for a skirt that is neither too loose nor too tight.
  • A cropped top with a maxi skirt will also create the illusion of height.
  • A shirt that hits at the hip looks great on tall women. If you are tall, try wearing a button-down shirt tied at the waist.
  • A pencil-type maxi skirt looks great on tall slim women.
  • If you are slim and tall, choose a maxi skirt that has horizontal stripes. They create a wider and shorter look. Billowy maxis are perfect for lean girls, particularly if paired with sleeveless or spaghetti tops.

What to Wear Underneath

You can wear your maxi skirt with your normal underwear. This may be bike shorts, panties or both. Some things to consider:

  • Full back-coverage underwear (as opposed to a thong or going commando) is ideal for maxi skirts to avoid the garment from getting stuck between the cheeks of your buttocks.
  • For a sheer maxi skirt, there is no need to wear other clothing underneath if you don't want to. Select a sheer maxi that shows what you’re comfortable showing. Also note that some sheer maxi skirts are see-through despite being lined.
  • Some ladies argue that see-through skirts are designed to show the underwear and therefore wear them without worrying that others can view their under-garments. In a futile attempt to keep their underwear from the glare of the public, others have opted to go without any underwear at all, but your mileage may vary on that one.
  • Another alternative is to wear tights, leggings, or a pettipant. This is a no-go for many as it would spoil the thrill of enjoying a maxi skirt. Yet another choice is wearing a mini, mid, bodycon or bandage skirt under the maxi. This may be uncomfortable and too dressy to many, especially with two thick waist bands competing for space.

Slip Under Maxi Skirts

Perhaps the best option is to wear your skirt over a half slip, also sometimes called waist slip. They are cheap and available in a variety of materials. The exact color may not be necessary. A close match will normally do.

Though slips are thin, they do not show through even with translucent dresses unless they are worn out. Full slips that strap from the shoulders are also available. But because of their bulky nature, they are usually used by older women, or for special occasion dresses.

Lengths vary from above knee to just over ankle. But if you like, you may also choose a formal/maxi slip. Slips make you warmer and might sometimes make you to sweat. Try different fabrics for the summer to see which makes you cooler. Avoid wearing slips that are too dark with light-colored dresses and skirts.

Benefits of Slips and Half Slips

  • Thin elasticized waists that go well with the skirt’s waist
  • They are lightweight, easy to clean and also dry
  • They make you warmer
  • One is enough to wear with all your see-through skirts and dresses
  • They enable your skirt or dress to hang out nicely, and not cling
  • They protect your skin from chaffing, especially if the skirt is of tough fabric like wool
  • If you wear your waistband over the slip, it will be guarded against sweat—you can therefore wear your outfit longer with minimal washing
  • Styling sheer outfits—wear a slip that covers the thighs to show the silhouette of your lower legs

What to Wear on Top

The choice of a top to pair with your maxi skirt means a lot to your overall appearance.

  • A billowy skirt goes best with a fitting top, while a tight skirt pairs well with a loose top.
  • A printed top is better paired with a solid-color outfit, while a single color top is perfect with a print skirt.
  • A layered top is also fine. You can tuck in one layer and let the other one flow.
  • In the winter, you'll want to feel warm. Layering your top with a T-shirt inside will increase warmth. Choose a shirt that is long-sleeved.
  • Another option is a chambray, tucked in, underneath a cardigan. This pairing is marvelous.
  • In the fall, try a buttoned shirt and a jersey if necessary.
  • Try a blazer. A patterned blazer looks great with a plain skirt, while solid-colored blazers are better suited for business affairs. Try a glossy blazer and a loose skirt.
  • Denim and jeans jackets will make you elegantly casual. Most of them are lightweight and not too hot for day wear, making them great accessories for spring and summer.
  • A white t-shirt is good for summer. Should you plan to spend your day in the sun, opt for any top that is short-sleeved.

What Shoes to Wear With a Maxi Skirt

In selecting what shoes to wear with a maxi skirt, key issues to consider are climate, style of your skirt, and occasion.

  • Opt for closed-toed shoes in snowy weather, and aerated shoes for hotter weather.
  • Match your shoes to your top. If you can't do that, wear plain colors like black and brown for the shoes because they will go with most colors.
  • Heels are elegant and also feel and look amazing.
  • Pear-shaped and petite women will find high heeled footwear to be perfect for that elongating look. A maxi skirt with heels is perfect for almost any event.
  • Peep-toe pumps are especially cute with maxi skirts.
  • Short and medium-height women look great in maxi skirts with wedges.
  • Flats are good for tall women. For special occasions, choose flats that are neither too casual nor masculine. With long dresses and skirts, opt for strappy flats.
  • Wearing a maxi skirt and boots gives a tough impression. Boots are best-suited for the winter.
  • For ordinary outings, opt for fancy printed or lace-up boots. It’s better to choose boots that fall higher than your hemline, but you can choose low or high heeled boots depending on your taste.
  • Avoid over-the-knee boots if your skirt is made of a soft fabric.
  • A maxi skirt with sneakers is a good combination for casual wear. It results in a young, girlish look. For summer casual wear, you can wear canvas sneakers with a t-shirt.
  • Low- and high-top Converse sneakers. Low tops look better with long outfits. Should you opt for high tops, choose a patterned pair. Avoid for casual outings.

The length of your skirt is important in determining what shoes to wear. For example, floor-grazing skirts go better with heels. If you wear above-the-ankle skirts in winter, you can pair them with tights, socks, or leggings.

How to Wear a Sheer Maxi Skirt

Maxi skirts ideally cover the whole leg, but it’s not unfashionable to show them off. Accessorized the right way, a long sheer skirt can be incredibly sexy and well-aerated for hot weather.

  • If you don’t mind showing the silhouette of your legs, you can just pair it with a tunic or a long button-up shirt, sweater, or jacket.
  • If you'd rather not show the outline of their legs, you can opt for a mock sheer maxi. These are crafted just like an ordinary sheer gown, but thanks to an opaque lining underneath the sheer layer, nothing actually shows through. The two materials can either be closely matched or in contrasting colors.
  • A still better option is to take the skirt to a tailor and ask them to put in a lining, or, if you're an adept sewer you can try doing it yourself. You can get linings, which are usually made of nylon, in a variety of colors. Find one that best fits your skirt’s tint. Be sure the lining is straightened up, especially if it’s for a form fitting skirt. Clothes with creased linings underneath are terrible.
  • Another great option for coverage is to wear a half slip, also sometimes called waist slip or petticoat. They are cheap and are available mostly in cotton, nylon, and polyester. The exact color you need may not be available, but a close match will normally do. Though a slip may be thin, it will normally not show through. Full slips that strap from the shoulders are available but mostly favored by older women.

If you feel that your sheer maxi is too revealing and you need a bit of coverage, you can wear lace bike shorts or a slip underneath. Biker shorts will look better than leggings or tights with sheer outfits. Slips or half-slips, especially the laced varieties, can be very stylish.

Maxi skirt outfit

Flickr

Proper blending of accessories can transform maxi skirts from one event to another, and still fit in both. How you wear your skirt matters to a great extent on what you feel. For instance, a tight skirt in the summer will make you unnecessarily hot. A single or double split look sexy and decent especially if the skirt is loose enough.

The versatility of a maxi skirt cannot be underestimated. Wearing a belt, thick or thin, is amazing. A belt emphasizes the figure-8 and also makes legs look longer. Apart from considering what to wear with your maxi skirt, always make the best choice of skirt. Poor selection of skirts results in not being able to dress it properly. Longer than necessary height means a limited choice for shoes, and may also be a safety hazard. Following the right outfit ideas will ensure you with the comfort of a pajama, and a lavish show of good taste. I hope that these style tips will give you a clearer picture of what to wear with a maxi skirt.

With six dogs to walk, I don't wear skirts so often these days, but my LBS (long black skirt) still does me proud when I need it.

A long black skirt is one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe.

The LBS - Your Wardrobe Essential

If you don't own a long black skirt, then your wardrobe could be lacking a vital element. There are so many ways to wear a plain, black skirt that you are only limited by your imagination. You could choose a slinky jersey skirt or a casual cotton and wear it with almost everything else in your wardrobe.

Seeing a long black skirt on a hanger can feel a little intimidating. How do you wear it? What goes with it? Is it too long? What shoes will go with it? Or perhaps you simply think it looks plain and boring? On the contrary, it can be the basis of a very chic capsule wardrobe.

Discover all the styling tricks and tips to make your skirt work hard for you.

Chic and Neat - Office Skirt

Make sure your skirt is perfectly pressed. Always iron your skirt inside out or with a pressing cloth between the fabric and the iron. Team it with a flattering long-line blazer, a cream tank top, a wide red belt and heels. This look will take you into a formal meeting with panache. Remove the jacket and you are ready for informal drinks after work.

Country Girl Skirt

This look works well with fuller, ankle-length skirts. Add a lacy underskirt which is longer than your skirt. Team with a short or crop top and a loose leather belt. Wear with boots in winter or gladiator sandals in summer. Swap the top for a shirt and vest, change your footwear to Victorian lace-up boots and pile on some unusual accessories for a trendy steampunk outfit.

Pixabay

Asymmetrical Long Skirt

Experiment by pinning your skirt up to allow free movement. Expose a little leg or reveal a cute underskirt. Use several pins or brooches to give the skirt a fashionable uneven hemline. Go for a retro 80s feel by wearing with a ruffled blouse and a hat. New Romantic is back!

Fame! Skirt

Team your long skirt with black leggings, a pretty pastel blue or pink ballerina cardigan and pumps. Wrap a long paisley scarf or shawl around your hips and you are good to “live forever.”

Long Skirt Layers 1

Layer a long black cotton skirt with a second skirt. This works really well if one of the skirts has a button closure that you can leave half undone to reveal the skirt underneath. Wear with a sweater, scarf and long boots—sheepskin is perfect—for a great, casual winter outfit.

Long Skirt Layers 2

Wear a sheer, chiffon long black skirt over a tight-fitting, strapless. short black dress for instant glamor. If the black skirt has an elastic waist, pull the waistband of the skirt up until it is level with the top of the dress for even more glamor. Tuck the waistband into the top of the dress to keep them firmly attached.

Dress Up Skirt

Transform your long skirt into a dress by wearing with a matching top and a wide belt to cover up the waist band. Add your best jewelry and a pashmina for a night out, or chunky bracelets and a crochet shrug for any other time.

Take it to the Beach

Wear your skirt and a sheer summery top over a bikini. Slip on some pretty sandals, add a big floppy straw hat, pack your gear into a brightly colored tote and head off to the beach. A long skirt is a great way to cover up if you have overdone the sunbathing.

Feet First

Wear your skirt with unconventional footwear to make an individual anti-fashion statement. Try it with Converse boots, ballet pumps, Doc Martens, trainers, Crocs or anything you like.

Eclectic Skirt

Try this experiment: put on your long black skirt. Now, try on every other piece in your wardrobe with it. Mix it up. I bet the skirt looks fantastic with that leather flying jacket you never thought you'd wear again. And how about that long wool cardigan/coat? Get out those peeptoe platform shoes – see how beautifully they peep from under a long hemline. Layer, layer, layer. Add those accessories. Try on those hats. That skirt will work with anything!

Put on your multi-colored leggings, pin up that skirt, add a turquoise tee.

Big brassy bangles, a floppy black hat—it's perfect for a fun shoppping spree.

Are they smart? Stupid? Slutty? Well, guess what . . . you're wrong! It's time to discover what these short-skirters really are in this riveting, whistle-blowing exclusive.

Simone enjoys fashion and fashion accessories. She also finds garments to be more about strategy than stereotypes.

The Meaning of the Short Skirt and Why You Might Want to Rethink Your Opinion

Canva

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am a huge proponent of the short skirt. These loincloth-like garments have manifold benefits and are quite versatile to boot. That said, short skirts, despite their small size, are loaded with mixed messages and emotional baggage.

Nearly everyone harbors some (or a truckload full of) prejudices about these skimpy garments. Don't pretend that you stand apart from the judging masses, sir and/or madam! It is much better to bring the major short-skirter stereotypes out into the open, acknowledge their valid points, dispel their weak points, and ascend to higher planes of understanding.

Feel free to skip around and read only about the short skirt prejudices that you personally harbor. If, however, you are a short skirt wearer, I heartily recommend reading the whole article. Let's go! So . . . you think women in short skirts are . . .

She's not slutty; she's just enjoying the smoke machine from a better vantage point.

Serge Melki, CC-BY, via flickr

Sluts

Many associate short skirts with sluttiness and, therefore, assume that the women donning them are, by the power of garment-reputation-transferral, slutty individuals (or if you prefer, strumpets).

This is often a fair point. If loose women were to wear a uniform, it would probably incorporate a very high hemline. Skimpy skirts are just so darned practical. And, I suppose, provocative. Clearly short skirts deviate as far as possible from all principles of modesty, so anyone actively trying to demonstrate non-slutty behavior would be foolish to wedge into one.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of non-strumpets out there who love wearing short skirts simply because they're fun, funny, non-restrictive, super breathable, and less of a laundry burden. I know many of them. They're more prudish than a handful of very modest (but nonetheless very . . . frisky) women I know. The gist is this: Yes, some women who wear short skirts are sluts. But some are not. So don't judge too harshly, young grasshopper.

Well, that red mini-mini skirt *does* clash a bit with the plunger. Not supposed to mix the two after Labor Day.

Orin Zebest, CC-BY, via flickr

Distasteful

Many women wearing short skirts (myself included) should likely not be wearing short skirts for the following reasons:

  • They show too much, and not in a good way
  • They don't fit properly
  • They don't conform to social norms
  • They are not appropriate for a given place/crowd/occasion
  • They attract too much attention

There are indeed scenarios in which short skirts should not be worn, and about 50% of women wearing short skirts are, indeed, wearing them in bad taste. That's right. About 50% of women wearing short skirts are (alas) distasteful.

What I wish to call to your attention is that not only that 50% of women succeed in wearing short skirts appropriately and in good taste, but also that the 50% of women who fail to do so still have the right to do so (at least in most places), and that is a huge societal advancement.

That women have the freedom to make these poor choices for themselves, to flaunt their cellulite, lame panties, and muffin tops, to make people uncomfortable and insult their good taste, and to make general fools of themselves, is brilliant! This is feminism at its best! Revel in its distasteful glory!

What's more, one must always keep in mind that distastefulness lies at the very reactor core of fashion. The distasteful move of today may very well be the height of good taste tomorrow.

Sexy

Yes, yes, many people (often individuals who associate short skirts with sluts) find short skirts to be sexy. Additional elaboration is not necessary. But have you considered the un-sexy side of short skirts? Have you meditated on the unflattering things that they reveal? Have you contemplated the manner in which the thighs of women wearing short skirts stick to, and must subsequently be peeled off of, bus seats, park benches, and other seats in hot weather?

Have you considered that women wearing short skirts have so little left to reveal? That they might be flaunting their sausage-like thighs out of sad, pitiful desperation? Where is the sexiness in that? If I were a guy, I don't know how much I'd really appreciate women in short skirts. When one really thinks about them, they're not that sexy at all.

Short skirt wearers have their moments.

Jemingway, CC-BY, via flickr

Stupid

If you find short skirts to be impractical, immodest, or just a sign of feminine daftness, chances are you associate the women wearing these contentious garments with stupidity. There are indeed times when women wearing short skirts are stupid. From personal experience, I can tell you that I was very stupid to wear a short skirt:

  • In a typhoon
  • In below-freezing weather during a blizzard
  • While walking alone down dark alleyways in the dead of night

However, I was more than stupid in those moments. I was also being . . .

  • Ironic
  • Self-deprecating
  • Humorous
  • Adventurous
  • Manipulative

So before knocking a short-skirt-wearing woman for being stupid, take a moment to consider whether or not she might also be something else as well. Perhaps she is feeling depressed and needs to laugh at herself. Perhaps she needs help and realizes that the best way to get it in a given controlled situation is to look stupid and helpless. Perhaps she is very smart indeed but simply likes the breeze.

The point I am trying to make is that one can be at once stupid and many, many other things. And often stupidity is a gateway to surprising genius.

Perhaps this was not the perfect photo choice...

Smart, Fashionable, Strategically Savvy

I've just finished describing how wearing a short skirt may not be so stupid, but don't think I'm letting short-skirting gals off the hook.

Short skirts can be used for a lot of things: mobility, manipulation, tanning, fashion, ventilation, and even impromptu tourniquets. Still, there are far superior alternatives to short skirts that are readily available to all women, and any female depending too heavily on short skirts to meet her goals, whatever they may be, is nothing more than a sad, one-trick pony.

As with all things, short skirts are best utilized in moderation. Taking them too far, or using them too frequently, is more than just stupid; it's sad.

What are short-skirt wearing women to you?

Like I said, we've all got short skirt prejudices. What are yours? Let your voice be heard in the poll to your right. Just keep in mind that there is always more to a short skirt wearing woman than meets the eye. The same can be said of anyone wearing any sort of garment, be it a burqa or a zoot suit. Try not to judge people's outfits to harshly.

As some old dude once said, "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players." The things we wear are mere costume pieces. We're simply having fun with life. Take what you see with a grain of salt, and let the plot and characters, not the costumes, reveal life's brilliant stories. You're bound to enjoy the show much more that way.

Have your opinions on short skirters changed?

kaf9292 on April 16, 2020:

As Bruce stated both men and women who wear short skirts are displaying the intelligence to make smart, practical, comfortable choices in clothing rather than attempting to emulate their next door neighbor. They think for themselves rather than mindlessly following a "herd mentality".

Bruce Johnson on April 16, 2020:

You gave 7 choices for "Women in short skirts are": There should be one more choice: CONFIDENT

Having tried on a short stretch denim 5 pocket mini skirt as a male to see what it is all about I discovered COMFORT was my number one sensation followed by FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT was outstanding. A short skirt simply makes more sense for males to wear than females due to no crotch binding inseams. Someday guys will wake up and quit following "Social Conformity".

Add: Men and women in short skirts are... COMFORTABLE!

D on July 12, 2016:

i wouldn't tell my girlfriend what to wear, but I was a bit gutted when she said she wouldn't wear shorts because of her legs looking bad. I adore her legs .. especially the cellulite on the top of her thighs; does it for me.

Naughtly I'd quite like to see her in a short skirt. And enjoy the psychology of glances to her from other people/ guys ;-)

Having said that her running gear shows off her shape nicely anyway.

Jason Lim from Singapore on December 21, 2011:

Confident, and a gift to men's eyes everywhere.

Anon on December 19, 2011:

This falls into the stupid skirt-wearing category:

I used to have to visit prisons for work every so often. And one day I turned up for work having not having thought my day through very carefully. I was wearing a smart, but figure hugging dress, with a short, split skirt. And that afternoon I was due to go to a high security male prison. Wasn't anything I could do about it. I had to go. Unfortunately I had to walk up a metal grate staircase to get to the offices, one of the ones you can see through.

Well luckily I had learnt to turn my ears off to jeers, wolf-whistles and comments. Going regularly into that kind of environment you just do. And I learnt my lesson that day, from then onwards I made sure I was wearing trousers for every prison visit.

short skirt wearers-i hope have awesome legs and are wearing the right panties. if not short skirt wearers may be advertising something else or blind.

Princessrockstar on December 16, 2011:

I'm a short skirt wearer, about two inches above the knee. I also love tights, high heels, and band t-shirts haha. I feel like I'm judged very harshly, but I wear what I want because I like feeling like a girl and you only get one life :D

AEvans on October 26, 2011:

In my 20's I wore short skirts and dresses! For some reason as I have gotten through the 20-something my hemlines have dropped and I really love the pencil skirts. Those to look very sexy, with a nice pair of pumps. I laughed until I cried with this hub! :D

smzclark from cheshire on October 24, 2011:

short skirts are one thing, but when you can even see the skirt until their top rises up...that's what is unnacceptable! i was recently walking up the stairs in a club behind a girl in one of these 'so-called' skirts. i could not believe my eyes when i looked up to see that she was wearing nothing underneath!!! i worry for my daughters future...hopefully the fashion will be more tasteful by then.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on October 17, 2011:

Excellent point, leroy! I've seen a lot of women wearing jeans that look MUCH sexier than they would in short skirts.

Brian L. Powell from Dallas, Texas (Oak Cliff) on October 17, 2011:

Hey it's leroy64 again. I was checking out the comments again. They are a lot of fun to read. With all of the attention on short skirts, I feel an urge to remind people that women can look sexy in jeans and sweatshirt, or jeans and anything really. I am not complaining about the short skirts; but, short skirts are only one option. If you are uncomfortable in short skirts, rock those blue jeans.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on October 17, 2011:

You're quite right, Erin Boggs1!

And that's a really good question, BurinessTime! I've been wondering the same thing myself lately. I think they do make a significant difference, and I agree with you in that it's much more comfortable to wear short skirts with boots and tights. Sitting on stuff is less gross, too!

Sarah Kolb-Williams from Twin Cities on October 14, 2011:

What a great hub! Here's another layer to add to the topic: do boots and/or legging affect the impression as well? I have a few short skirts myself, and I can occasionally be seen on a hot day in July with bare legs and flip-flops, but I'm MUCH more comfortable in the fall wearing the same skirt over leggings and boots. Same shape, less skin! I feel fashionable and pretty without feeling uncomfortable or like I have to check my hemline every 5 seconds. :)

Erin Boggs1 from Western Maryland on October 11, 2011:

I agree with you Simone, but the only reason that it is hard to mock them without perpetuating them is because unfortunately there are many young women, who should be more concerned with proving that their brains are the most seductive object they possess, that are continuously trying to prove the old stereotypes to be true. We all know the types, we have at least once in our lives had to stand in the same room with them while wishing that a freak lightening storm would form and strike the building just so that we could watch the them have to run out of a flaming building in those 6 inch stilettos that she wears with that hiked up skirt just hoping she will trip (maybe not to that extreme lol). And at least once in our lives we have all tried to pull off a short skirt even if it was just in our house in front of a mirror.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on October 10, 2011:

Excellent insights, Erin! I'm with you all the way. Stereotypes are rarely, if ever, accurate. I prefer to mock them rather than perpetuate them, but it looks like it's hard to do the former without doing the latter!

tanyarobyn from London on October 10, 2011:

I love short skirts! Worn tastefully they can be very sexy.

Erin Boggs1 from Western Maryland on October 10, 2011:

Simone, I like this article...but as a woman loves the pencil skirt, usually supposed anywhere from 4 inches above the knee to knee length, and who also stands at height of 5'9" I don't feel that some of these opinions are fair. I am a nerd, a smart woman who loves to be taken seriously, unfortunately the average woman stands 5'3" to 5'5" so the skirts that can be found are usually way to short for my liking. I have found have to pass on every skirt as they are too short for a woman my height, so I wear dress pants, but when you go on a date with your fiancé it would be nice to wear a skirt and know people are looking at you like a slut.

I really do understand where you are coming from with these stereotypes. As there are lot of girls who do or are all of the above things. Those women make it harder for us women that seem to be descendents of big foot.

As always I love your work. Have a great day!

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on September 27, 2011:

Well, there you go, sakesare.

You're right about location, nikashi_designs. And interesting observation! I'd never heard of that video until this point.

nikashi_designs on September 27, 2011:

Will keep this Short! Short shorts look great on some women but not on most. Also, I think location is an important factor. I lived in South Beach for seven years and all the girls wear short shorts. No one is really stunned or thinks anything about it. At the same time I lived in Boston for a while which is very conservative and when young women wore short shorts they were really looked at, some my consider them of questionable moral. You have to know your audience. I think Jessica Simpson, these boots were made for walking video revitalized the fashion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPtfsk4ETjM

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on September 26, 2011:

Fair assessment, jessicatools!

I think there is something quite classy and classic about dressing modestly, tlmcgaa70, and I tip my hat to you for dressing in a manner that's best for your body type- not that's best for the current trends. I could learn a lot from you!

Hahaa, that sounds like a loincloth, Patty Inglish, MS! Though I guess many micro-minis and loincloths are pretty much the same thing. And hey, short skirts and long jackets are awesome. Cake wrote that song for a reason! I've done the blizzard thing too. It scares the crap out of people! Don't you LOVE that??

I think that is very fair, balanced advice, Moon Daisy!

Thanks so much for stopping by, JeniferRW! Life sure does have enough to get one down, so I say it's best to do as many fun, superfluous, ridiculous things as possible. It's impossible not to live without offending someone, so you're quite right- there's no use in worrying about it most of the time.

Moods and skirt lengths... I like the idea, Carlon Michelle! And yeah, it's a shame when folks overdo with everything- perfume, showy clothes... though it is also wonderfully entertaining!

Attikos, that is the best set of answers. Simplicity wins again. Thanks for the excellent comment!

Attikos from East Cackalacky on September 26, 2011:

When faced by a question with a potentially multifaceted answer, reduce it to its simplest terms:

Women who wear short skirts are ...

A. showing off their legs if in a social setting; or

B. freeing their legs for less restrictive action if in an athletic setting.

Due to the expectations of others not all social settings are appropriate for it (a formal ball, for one), nor due to ambient conditions are all athletic settings (take snow skiing, for instance). Other than that, though, there's not a thing wrong with either one.

Carlon Michelle from USA on September 25, 2011:

Great controversial hub! I think short skirts like any other type of clothing has to be done right. I try never to wear a short skirt more than 2 inches above my knees. I have thick thighs and a bit of cellulite that I don't want to see and figure the world could do without seeing. Everything below my skirt length is sexy. So yeah I have moods where I like to show them.

I think loin cloth skirts where women only cover their buttocks are giving the world a different type of message such as I need lots of attention and I don't care if it's the wrong kind as long as it's attention. These are generally worn very tight and topped with breast showing clothing, too much makeup and over indulgence in perfume. That's when the message of I'm fashionable and sexy takes a walk. So the slut part comes with the entire look, walk, posture and additional clothing and accessories.

Smile!

Jen from Couch on September 25, 2011:

Love this hub! It shines a whole new vantage point on women wearing short skirts plus it's full, as always of comedic anecdotes and wit. I definitely am not one who wears short skirts simply because I'm just not comfortable with it on myself. Can't say I have ever looked at a woman wearing a short skirt and judged them for it either though. To each their own..and if short skirts are your thing or anything that is comfortable and makes you feel good about you, then I say Bravo! Generally we all worry so much about what others are thinking of us, they too, are worrying about our opinions of them. If wearing a short skirt or no clothes at all (outside of going to jail), makes you feel beautiful or confident, keep it up because life has enough crappy things in it to bring you down already, without having to worry if somebody might be offended by the length of your skirt.

Patty Inglish MS from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 25, 2011:

Moon Daisy from London on September 25, 2011:

"The point I am trying to make is that one can be at once stupid and many, many other things". Love it!

Moon Daisy from London on September 25, 2011:

I think short skirts are fine. My own personal view is that people can look good in them if they wear them casually, with flat shoes like flip-flops, crocs or converse. Heels and short skirts look old-fashioned and ageing in my opinion. They also look good with leggings.

It helps if you are the right shape to wear a short skirt, otherwise it can be unflattering.

Patty Inglish MS from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 25, 2011:

The subgenre that got to me as inappropriate was the micro-miniskirt that also had a slit in the hem going half-way up the skirt - matching short-shorts or dance panties were really needed. Now, with fashionable tights underneath and a matching blouse, this was interesting for dance wear, though.

I wore short shirts in a blizzard - that's all you could buy that year. So, we wore longer coats.

tlmcgaa70 from south dakota, usa on September 24, 2011:

i am not a fan of mini skirts, maybe because i am smart enough to realize they would not compliment my figure. but also, i have always leaned more towards the modest look. a bit old fashioned, but there you go. someone above me mentioned overweight women who dress in skimpy clothes. i have never understood how they could think they looked good...i would be mortified to wear clothes that do not cover me decently...the only exception is a bathing suit and even it is a one piece with a skirt on it. i am over weight but have been told i have a nice figure. but to me it is not one i would care to share with the world.

Non-Conformist on September 16, 2011:

Love the articule. I have to say I wore a short skirts through out my late teens to early twenties. For me it was just fashion and a bit of fun. Expressing ones youth openess, and madness without offending too many glaring-eyes! I knew full well that once I hit my late twenties I would no longer be able to wear a mini-skirt as a young-fashion-fun piece of clothing! Like some of the girls in my school at the age o 18 were wearing laury-ashely dress that just made them look like they were in their thirities!

Good point about contextual clothing, Pia! So glad you're for short skirts, Silva Hayes! And so true about matching underwear. So true!

Sigh... perhaps you're right, sharewhatuknow! Though I hope/think not. Or at least hope/think not at least within the context of my own workplace. I don't think anyone notices my short skirts. I hope not. I don't want to give them up!

If you have the bod to wear short skirts, then do so. That is no more different than women with those bods that wear bikinis and obviously have to shave, if you get my meaning.

However, short skirts should be kept out of the office where there are more than a handful of employees. For one, the hetero males are going to go gaga and approach/flirt with you every chance they get, decreasing actual man hours at work. Pardon the pun.

Likewise, the women who refuse to dress like that, sexy bod or not, or CAN'T dress like that because they would be the laughing stock of the company, pardon the pun once again, are the ones who will despise you and state that you are just seeking attention.

naturalsolutions on September 08, 2011:

I think it's just matter of fashioned why girls wearing short skirts. Maybe the meaning of wearing that is really depends on the people looking. Some people are so conservative, others are liberated but the important thing is what it's attitude we must always remember not to judge the person on it's physical appearance, sometimes looks are deceiving.

Silva Hayes from Spicewood, Texas on September 08, 2011:

I'm twerty times eleven and I was reprimanded once by the office manager for my short skirt. Hahaha. This was way back in the late Sixties. I think they're fashionable in any decade. Although I think it would be a good idea to wear matching color underwear when one wears a short skirt. And they do look uncomfortable when ladies sit down for an interview on TV and must clamp their knees together and sit sideways so the audience doesn't get an unintended view. Overall, I vote for the short skirt. And I think your writing style is brilliant.

PiaC from Oakland, CA on September 08, 2011:

Its what one wears with the short skirt that makes the outfit I think. A short skirt paired with a white shirt and boots is work appropriate, while a spangly top and heels make the same skirt more appropriate for parties. :)

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on September 01, 2011:

Oh, what a good point you make, talfonso! I had never thought of skirts used in dance as "short skirts" - they were always just strictly in the 'costume' category of my mind. But they're totally short skirts!

Good Hub, but I believe that there is a time and place for short skirts. The situation where I can tolerate them the most is anything with dance as art, in particular jazz dance (especially with high school dance teams/dancelines/drill teams with band) and ballet.

I think when short skirts are worn appropriately they are cute. It depends on a few things.

1. the length

2. the style

3. the girl who's wearing it!

If I am to wear a short skirt, it's going to at least be long enough so that when I bend over my butt doesn't pop out the bottom. Also, leggings or stockings are nice to wear underneath to not be such a "strumpet". :)

Short skirts are gorgeous when worn properly. I am an old lady now and still wear them sometimes. There is a point where short becomes slutty and even a young, beautiful girl cannot pull that off. Short leaves imagination intrigued, slutty says, "How much?"

And I took FloraBR's 'twirty' as a clever way of not giving away her age ... definitely a new word I am going to use, even though I'm 'sisty'.

PS. I was once sent home from work as my skirt was too short and all the old geezer's in the office were having heart attacks when I bent over. Of course in those days I was naughty and had no cellulite ... great fun!

Some women can look good wearing short skirts, some can't. If you make someone gag, while bulging out of the top and bottom and it looks more like a tourniquet than a skirt, DON'T wear it. Bad taste seems to abound any more (at least where I live), and I am not sure who told these women that fat was sexy, but they were wrong. Cover it up. If you are not built to wear a short skirt, do the world a favor, and don't.

Short skirts and flip-flops in an office are a personal call. It comes down to the question of "Do you want to advance in your career?" If you do, don't wear them, dress conservatively.

Thelma Alberts from Germany on August 05, 2011:

Great hub. Wearing short skirts? It depends what kind of a person who is wearing the short skirt. It is how the way she moves that makes us judge how she is. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.

50 Caliber from Arizona on August 05, 2011:

Simone, those mirror shoes are something, never had any, but when I lived in California my bank had line ropes for people to line up in and the bases were mirror chrome and by accident I noticed one day, wow what a view! Made waiting in line a bit more fun and got me slapped up side the head one day, never saw it coming, LOL, 50

Gail Sobotkin from South Carolina on August 05, 2011:

Great hub with lots of wit and style regardless of whether or not one likes short skirts on women. Voted up across the board.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on August 05, 2011:

Wow, thanks applecsmith! I appreciate your reading the Hub!

You're justified in your view, EBower- a recent study by Adecco revealed that 70% of respondents found miniskirts to be inappropriate for the office (though 71% were also against flip flops, which I find pretty inoffensive).

HennieN- you're right. It's all about the woman.

Even working girls dress for each other, PETER LUMETTA! I can definitely attest to that. Thanks for stopping by!

FloraBreenRobison, I now want to tell everyone that I am twirty years old. Let's make this a word that encompasses all ages that are generally awesome. And YOU ROCKED SKORTS!! NICE!!! I can't find them ANYWHERE these days.

Agreed, mtsi1098! Much of short skirt wearing has to do with the "I can pull this off" attitude of the wearer.

Excellent rule of thumb, LiamBeam. I've lived by that and it works quite well.

Whoever invented mirrored shoes, 50 Caliber, is brilliant. They're so much more subtle than the conflict-ridden upside down periscopes of the 1830s.

Glad to have cleared that up for you, leroy64! Boy, it's AWFUL to sit in short skirts. Once, I sat on a hot, painted metal chair- and when I stood up, the paint flecked off with my legs! IT HAD FUSED TO MY SKIN!!!

Wise words, sharmanlow. Short skirts should absolutely be worn responsibly.

raakachi from Madurai / Tamilnadu / India on August 05, 2011:

very fine! very interesting! Any way thanks for your sharing.

sharmanlow on August 05, 2011:

found your hub interestingly gorgeous. skirts? short or not, you just to be responsible when wearing them.

Brian L. Powell from Dallas, Texas (Oak Cliff) on August 05, 2011:

Thankyou,

I now understand why those women at the train station would not sit down. The temperature had gone above 100 degrees and the seats were metal. Honestly, I don't think about short skirts much. They turn my brain off, or make me laugh depending on the situation.

50 Caliber from Arizona on August 05, 2011:

Being a dirty old man the only thing I'd like to hold against them is... um bleep bleep..... They make the mirrors on my toes well worth the money FLMAO, first rate hub, 50

LiamBean from Los Angeles, Calilfornia on August 05, 2011:

My take on this is that if a woman has to forcefully pull the skirt down as she sits it's probably too short.

That said there is nothing quite as nice as a great pair of legs highlighted by a short skirt.

mtsi1098 on August 05, 2011:

despite that you think you should not wear short skirts, I think women look great in them as long as they are comfortable wearing one...

FloraBreenRobison on August 05, 2011:

that is not since I turned "thirty". how I hate one handed typing. Looks like I created a word combining thirty with twenty. Would that then be a new word for twenty-five?

FloraBreenRobison on August 04, 2011:

I haven't eevr worn a short skirt as short as some of these in the pictures. I would feel like I had to spend a lot of time focusing on how I was sitting. I have worn skirts as short as half way down my thighs but not since I turned twirty. And I never did wear a short skirt to work. I do rermember a pair of shorts that had a wrap around that I wore in highschool. It looked like a mini skirt from the front, but they were shorts. I would never feel comfortable-at any age- in a skirt as short as the women with the smoke machine. Too revealing for me.

PETER LUMETTA from KENAI, ALAKSA on August 04, 2011:

Most cases women dress for the benefit of other women, unless they are working girls. To me as a man it all just looks good and I want to see more. Not a rocket science test question, Loved it, Peter

HennieN from South Africa on August 04, 2011:

Interesting hub. For me it is about the person. Some ladies can wear short skirts with class, while others ... lets leave it here. There is nothing wrong with showing a little if you are able (keyword) to do it.

Erin Bower from Georgia on August 04, 2011:

I must confess I had to read this the whole way through. I admit that I usually believe short skirts are distasteful. Although, when not worn in the office, or on a stage, they can look decent on some women. I really enjoyed reading this; it was quite amusing, so I voted it up and awesome!

Carrie Smith from Dallas, Texas on August 04, 2011:

Fabulous hub again, as always! I enjoy how your articles challenge my mindset and offer new points of view. Bravo!

<![CDATA[How to Gracefully Wear a Short Mini Skirt]]>https://bellatory.com/clothing/Short-Mini-Skirt-Tipshttps://bellatory.com/clothing/Short-Mini-Skirt-TipsFri, 29 Apr 2011 03:50:05 GMTWith just an ounce of extra foresight and the right attitude, maneuvers, and mindset, you can wear a short mini skirt with majestic grace—danger be damned!

Simone enjoys fashion and fashion accessories. She also finds garments to be more about strategy than stereotypes.

Short skirts have manifold benefits. They're convenient. They're fun. They're cute. And they're very easy to move around in. Short miniskirts are the cutting edge in short-skirt living. They're extra fun. Extra cute. Extra easy to move around in. And let's be honest- if you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

Alas, living on the edge is dangerous. And because short mini skirts are so... short... the reckless souls wearing them do run a higher risk of looking ridiculous / bad / trampy / gross / distasteful, and downright inelegant.

Luckily, miniskirt hazards can be minimized. All you have to do is keep a handful of precautions in mind when donning them. With just an ounce of extra foresight and the right attitude, maneuvers, and mindset, you can wear a short mini skirt with majestic grace—danger be damned!

Be bold!

stevendepolo on flickr

Get Some Attitude!

Apparently, folks have this odd impression that miniskirts are all about making a statement. I personally see them as more of a way of life but to each his own.

No matter how you see miniskirts or the wearing thereof, you will have to be prepared to contend with others' reactions to your way of dress. Some will admonish you about hemlines. Others will ask you if you're cold. Others will say... other stuff. I recommend responding to all critiques and comments with benign ignorance—that's what I do. But you may also choose to respond with evil grins, colorful vitriol, or violent retribution.

No matter how you respond to others' commentary on your apparel, you must respond with attitude. You, as a miniskirt wearer, are acting as an ambassador to the world on behalf of all miniskirt kind. Represent us well. We have a reputation to keep up, and develop.

Sitting is risky business.

Funkdooby on flickr

Seating Hazards

Short mini skirts do absolutely nothing to provide a barrier between your pantied bum and whatever surface you sit on. You might not find this to be particularly troublesome, however, some surfaces, such as seats on public transport, park benches, and the ground, are not exactly clean. Other surfaces, such as some chairs and benches that are otherwise free of germs, harbor particulate matter that might stick to your skin (especially if it's humid outside) when it would simply slide off fabric.

It is therefore important to watch where you park your backside when wearing miniskirts. My general rule of thumb is not to sit down at all. This spares one any contact with unclean surfaces, and ALSO spares one from having to think about what she will place on her lap or how she will cross her legs to make sure that... well, that undergarments are not visible from the front end (because yeah, that's another unfortunate side effect of sitting in a short skirt).

Watch Those Stairs!

Another thing about wearing short skirts is that stairs are an issue. Or they are if you don't want people to see too much.

So here's where your ninja skills come into play! Only dart up stairs when nobody else is behind you, and if anyone ever is, maneuver so that you are BEHIND them. If you must walk up stairs in close proximity with another human, and if, god forbid, you cannot walk behind or beside said person, climb as closely in front of them as possible. The further up you are, the more they'll see.

If you're really extreme (read: cool), you can take the ninja moves a step further by throwing sand into the eyes of those behind you on stairs, so that they are blinded as you ascend (or, if you're particularly lucky, they tumble down the stairs to your great amusement).

If you do get jumpy... wear tights!

Funkdooby on flickr

Don't Get Too Jumpy

Some gals like to move around a lot. Kicking, dancing, twirling, jumping... whatever. It's good fitness.

Moving is great, but one must move with care when wearing a short mini skirt. There isn't a lot of give, as it were. So one must be sure that the skirt isn't flying up any further than the one or two inches of leeway it offers, coverage-wise. With a bit of practice, anyone will find that this is most manageable.

Of course, one can also take extra precautions by wearing tights for extra coverage. And for ultimate coverage, one can wear leggings. But those somewhat defeat the enjoyment one garners from dangerous, immoral dressing—or at least sneaking about the place wearing practically nothing. It is a trade-off one must consider carefully.

Watch for Wind

Weather forecasts help one to know when one ought to don wellies and a raincoat, or to grab an umbrella on the way out the door. Weather forecasts also aid one in deciding which type of short skirt to wear.

If it sounds as though it's going to be a windy day, you had better wear a tight miniskirt. One that won't flutter too high, because wind has a way with loose, fluttery skirts.

Even if the weather is calm, miniskirters still have to keep an eye out for breezes. Air conditioning vents, exhaust pipes, passing vehicles, and, yes, subway vents, are all responsible for bursts of air that can lead to lapses in grace (because not everyone is Marilyn Monroe).

I recommend these!

ohmeaghan on flickr

Wear Nice Underoos... or Bike Shorts

If you're wearing a miniskirt, rest assured there will be slip-ups. No matter how graceful you are. And if there are going to be slip-ups, you had best be prepared.

If you're the modest type, wear a pair of bike shorts. The pair shall need to be short, since most miniskirts are shorter than the average pair of bike shorts, but they're still useful!

If you're not so much the modest type, just make sure you're wearing underpants that would not embarrass you. Like the pair with Barney on them or something. Unless you're a hipster, and in that case, proceed.

Be Shameless

Gracefully wearing a short mini skirt takes careful foresight. But it also involves a certain amount of reckless abandon. If you're self-conscious about a short skirt you're wearing, you'll come across as awkward, not graceful. But if you're actively trying to look graceful in a short skirt, you'll come across as preposterous.

The only way to truly wear a miniskirt gracefully is to embrace the hazard. Samurai warriors accepted the fact that, if given a choice between life and death, they would choose death. This enabled them to do everything fearlessly.

If you wear a short skirt, you must accept the fact that you will, at times, look trashy, gross, scandalous, and downright wrong. Once you are at peace with this reality, you can finally flaunt the miniskirt look gracefully. That's just how it works.

Now go forth. And wear skimpy clothing.

Don't rule out short skirts for men! Men have worn short skirts throughout time far longer than women have. (Rome was built in the equivalent to today's micro mini skirts)!

Short skirts are becoming a trend for guys to wear for running, hiking and sitting. Nothing is more comfortable than a short skirt.... No crotch binding inseams for the first time, cooler than shorts, extreme freedom of movement, most women give a thumbs up. All good. Guys have no clue or they would be wearing short skirts as an alternative to shorts and pants.

As far as a inadvertent flash is concerned men have the exact same issues as women. It's largely a "state of mind". As long as you have the goods covered there is nothing to see thus no issues. It is poor taste to go "redundant" (wearing shorts under skirts). Wear one or the other and not both. It is a sure sign of insecurity and isn't necessary. (Shorts under skirts is a recent sign of the times. Women wore panties under mini skirts for nearly 50 years before this "redundancy" trend started).

Top clothing designers say there are no reasons for men not to wear skirts. All in this article applies to both men and women.

shortshortsdc on July 19, 2014:

Bootie...I have a lot of experience with very very short short cutoffs - and now nicely-hemmed, super-short denim shorts, and I have the same issues you do whenever I sit down. Sometimes I "modesty-tug" at mine, but of course that never works either, but it's fun trying, and it's fun when people are checking me out and clearly having fun with it. I have learned to have fun with it also, and I wear very pretty Victoria Secret panties that are a different color than my short shorts - it makes trying to "not" show them when I sit down all the more exciting. Keep enjoying your very, very short cutoffs!

Line Jensen from Denmark on March 14, 2014:

This hub was so funny, had me laughing several times - and I think, I'll go fetch my miniskirts from the back of my closet now!

Dave on March 03, 2014:

Guys simply don't get aroused seeing another guy no matter what he is wearing or not wearing. Six inch heels are absurd on anyone regardless of their gender. Color coordinated panties are mandatory with short shorts or a micro miniskirt.

Paige Desires from United States on March 02, 2014:

I do love wearing miniskirts and showing off my legs..but your right..do it with grace and style, and knowing there always be somebody thinking you dress trashy..who cares what they think..it's not them who I'm pleasing! It's my lifestyle and fashion..to each there own. As long as I'm comfortable and relaxed and happy with it..that's what counts!

bootie on August 18, 2013:

I'm a young guy who wears a thong and very, very short cutoff jeans instead of a short skirt, along with pointy toe cowboy boots with 6 inch heels. A problem I have is how to gracefully enter and exit my Jeep which is very high off the ground. Sitting is also a problem for me since crossing my legs exposes more than sitting with my legs together. Either way, the very short, tight cutoff jeans shorts are embarrassing to sit in. I try to pull on them to get them down but this doesn't work, either. Pulling on them when I sit actually arouses other guys since I can't get them down. Any suggestions? And don't say "wear longer shorts" because I just won't do it.

kaf9292 on August 03, 2013:

As a guy who frequently wears a skirt I can say that a guy must unlearn several habits that are simply unacceptable especially when wearing a short skirt. A matching color panty is highly recommended. Avoid a c-string since I know from a personal experience that it can become loose for some embarrassing moments especially if you are the only one around who is wearing a skirt or a dress. Avoid pleated minis on a windy day. Sit with a napkin on your lap or a book or something. Use your knees when you drop something rather than bending down from the waist. I probably write a book but the pure comfort has made it all worthwhile and that glorious understanding wife of mine is priceless for her words of advice.

Holly Mackenzie Cupp from United States on August 02, 2013:

Lol I can't get away with wearing most "knee-length" skirts with my long legs and big behind no matter how I stand, sit, or walk the skirt will ride up and bam! hoohah. Mini skirts don't even cover half my bootay. Props to everyone out there who can pull them off, I'll stick to dresses, pencil skirts, and maxi skirts. I found this hub humorous, great writing! =)

stephanie on August 07, 2012:

I have been told I have beautiful long legs. Consequently, I have to admit I like to show them off. One of those ways is with a mini. Yes, they can be challenging at certain times when wind and other obstacles are afoot, but nothing can compare to the sheer thrill of feeling so feminine and 'exposed.' I especially enjoy the looks I get from men. Delicious!

Sexy Diva on April 15, 2012:

I'm a man that likes to shop for short mini skirts and micro mini skirts and sometime I wear a short mini skirt while buying them. I get strange looks from people and I don't care. Those are the tyoe of skirts I wear the most. I learned some tips from reading your hub and looking forward to read more on this subject and keep up the good work. I'm a mini skirt fan and I'll support any man or woman that likes to wear mini skirts like me in any season.

girlwithin on October 29, 2011:

Just wear and enjoy. If you feel good go for it, I do!

Magoichi Saika on October 20, 2011:

The way I see it, the primary reason to wear a mini skirt is to show off your great looking thighs and, as a delightful bonus for your "prayerful" audience, everything else upstairs.

Personally, I would say that all the tips and tricks mentioned up there are a hassle. If you wear mini skirts, be assured that your audience will see what you can't see yourself. Which is neither supposed to be good or bad.

The only problem you should have is what under-thing you should wear underneath to hide your, well, thing.

C'mon, men whistling at you will only be for a short number of years. If you like the whistling but have physical hangups about this attire, time will pass till you can't wear them 'efficiently" anymore.

You'd look back at the days you wished you were more daring so your audience will be astonished at how beautiful your legs were! Plus, this will be part of your good memories!

Juliana on October 17, 2011:

Truth be told!

There is absolutely no way I can hide my long legs and very smooth African skin inside baggy sacks!

I have won mini skirts for the most part. And I feel very confident and good about myself always, when i am in them. I love the feeling, the compliments, much because I either wear them with high heels or nice designer flats or flip flops! There is a way it gives you extra boldness, and btw, anyone most of us mini skirt wearers are bold, and with time become an icon of confidence! yes!

Nothing in the world could stop me from wearing what I love best. I am so glad there are many people like me, and as Simone said, yes, we are ambassadors, and whatever we do with our mini skirt, we should just represent us very well. We have a reputation to protect, a legacy to live and myths to disprove!

Sarah on September 16, 2011:

My husband really loves it when we go out with me dressed in a super-short mini. Some of them actually show my bum cheeks when I walk. I never wear any knickers, so everyone gets a good view. It really turns my husband on, to the degree that we usually have a 'quickie' before we get home. Easy in a miniskirt and no knickers.

Sally Smith on September 16, 2011:

I love to wear really short mini skirts. I wear them all the time. It doesn't bother me if someone manages to look up them when I go up stairs or sit a bit carelessly. And by the way, I never ever wear panties or tights. Absolutely nothing underneath.

<![CDATA[5 Reasons to Wear Short Skirts]]>https://bellatory.com/clothing/Wear-Shorts-Skirtshttps://bellatory.com/clothing/Wear-Shorts-SkirtsTue, 26 Apr 2011 16:51:51 GMTLet us break the monotonous cycle of misinformation. Here are five REAL reasons why women, myself included, wear short skirts.

Simone enjoys fashion and fashion accessories. She also finds garments to be more about strategy than stereotypes.

I need to set the world straight. Women do not wear short skirts for men. When they do wear short skirts for other people, it just might be to show off in front of other girls, though I do not think that people flaunt miniskirts for that reason, either.

Wearing short skirts is awesome—and for more reasons than you might expect. I should know. I adhere to short skirts like a religion. I wear them regardless of season, occasion, or time of day. I get a lot of mileage out of them—and I'm not talking about getting attention, because I'm rather reclusive and shy.

Let us break the monotonous cycle of misinformation. Here are five REAL reasons why women, myself included, wear short skirts:

  1. Aesthetics
  2. Laziness
  3. Mobility
  4. Fitness
  5. Opportunity

Cake

Let's start with a bit of culture. Before you knock me off as a woman of loose dressing morals, keep in mind that for most of—well, half of—my life, skirts were entirely out of the picture. Everyone wore pants! I wore pants! Pants abounded!

And then I was introduced to culture. And Cake. You know, that band with the fantastic lyrics and trumpets and the grape-scented albums.

Along with culture (and Cake) came the adoration of short skirts. Cake specifically left me with Short Skirt/Long Jacket, which acts as a convenient microcosm for my societal brainwashing as well as the contents of my closet.

Take a moment and think of all the movies, magazines, models, shows, songs, and stars that have put short skirts on a pedestal. I dare you to tell me with a straight face that you still think women wear short skirts for other people. But I am not finished yet. Let us proceed.

Short skirts are aesthetically interesting.

brehantodd on flickr

1. Aesthetics

Face it. Nearly every short skirt out there is more aesthetically interesting than a pair of pants—or even a long skirt (this was, of course, not the case when petticoats were still the norm). They have more flare and verve. They also do more for pleats than their midi or maxi sisters.

Short skirts do more to show off the leg, not to mention boots, knee socks, thigh highs, and shoes, which are more often than not sadly concealed under pants and long skirts

2. Laziness

Believe it or not, short skirts are great for lazy people. As they are so small, they are exceedingly easy to put on. In all honesty, they are the closest modern alternative to loin cloths, and everyone knows clothing gets neither easier nor more rudimentary than those garments.

What's more, short skirts make the cumbersome task of going to the bathroom (which, tragically for women, always requires sitting down) far easier as they can simply be hiked up (and to to their spare yardage, even the hiking is reduced to more of a from-couch-to-fridge stroll). No doubt this has already spared me at least a collective two hours I would have otherwise spent fumbling with pants, long skirts, or (god forbid) overalls.

I dare you to try shooting and slashing off heads in a pencil skirt. Go on. Waddle your way to fierceness.

perry_marco on flickr

3. Mobility

Believe me, I tried to give midi and maxi skirts a try. Really, I did. And what did it get me? A sprained ankle. True story.

The fact of the matter is that medium and long skirts, especially pencil skirts and narrow skirts, severely restrict movement. And long skirts that have lots of fabric get caught on things and can entangle and trip their incapacitated wearers. I have walked around cities in giant goose costumes (another true story) that are easier to move in than some of my cute medium/long skirts. It's infuriating.

Any girl who wants to take broad bounds and leaps, kick stuff, lunge, and even walk aggressively must wear a short skirt. It is a simple mechanical issue.

Obviously pants are an alternative, but short skirts are far more fun to wear.

Short skirts remind you of the importance of exercise.

Marco Gomez on flickr

Sitting in a short skirt? Ehh.... not so great. But that's all the more opportunity for a core-workout-heavy bout of metro surfing!

Kai Hendry on flickr

4. Fitness

Believe it or not, short skirts lead to excellent fitness. Bear with me.

  1. First, they remind the wearer of the importance of regular exercise. While it is easy to hide inconvenient fitness truths under baggy clothes and pants, short skirts bear one's body for the whole world to see. This keeps the wearer honest- and conscientious about gym attendance.
  2. Second, short skirt wearers are more likely than their safely swaddled counterparts to stand rather than sit. Why? Because sitting in a public place whilst wearing a short skirt is gross. Downright disgusting.

A bunch of studies have been making their way toward the media referring to how disgusting seats on public transport are. These seats, laced with viruses and fecal matter, are so gross that even the jean-wearing masses hesitate to use them. Those wearing short skirts, which pretty much don't provide any intermediary between seats and panty-clad bottoms, are even more averse to the prospect.

Even if one is not germ phobic, sitting in short skirts can still be less than ideal. Once I had the bad judgment to sit down on a metal painted chair in a hot building. When I stood up after an hour, half the paint had fused to my legs and came off with me. This has happened more than once.

Short Skirts Make You Stand

My ultimate point is that sitting is inconvenient for short skirters, and for this reason, they stand whenever given the option to do so.

Standing inspires movement, and even when done in a stationery manner, requires more muscle use. Hence standers are, on the whole, doing more to keep fit.

As a side note, standers also spend more time in positions of dominance. I mean, someone on her feet is always going to appear more powerful than someone slouched into a chair.

5. Opportunity

Finally, those wearing short skirts are making the most of a fleeting opportunity. Neither their age nor fitness will last for long. The body is a tool. An asset. A toy. You can choose to take good care of it and fully utilize it, or you can ignore, or even stifle, its manifold features.

Different people choose to celebrate different aspects of their bodies—their strength, their voices, their minds, and yes, their legs. Those wearing skirts are simply doing the most they can with an excellent and fleeting opportunity. Some might call doing so gauche, distasteful, or even irresponsible, but I call it smart.

Long Live Short Skirts!

I will admit that short skirts are not for all body types and all ages. I will also concede that short skirts are not always the appropriate thing to wear. But when the body type, age, and situation are aligned in favor of these minuscule garments, they are definitely worth wearing. So consider your personal constellations. Can a short skirt factor in? I hope so!

Men and women wear short skirts for comfort. I know I certainly do not care what you think of my legs although they are as smooth, tanned and hairless as any lady's legs. What is so difficult to understand about wanting to dress as comfortably as permitted when you have to wear clothing.

Julio on July 31, 2019:

I am not buying that women do not wear short skirts for others to notice. You just said that it shows your legs off when you have nice legs. If you wear short skirts just for you then why does ot matter whether you legs look good or not.

DonaldDucko on June 04, 2019:

Look at the differences in men’s and women’s clothing. Women’s stuff is lighter, tighter, shorter, exposes more skin. Is their a reason a woman’s shirt scoops all the way down revealing their boobs? Do tell a functional reason for this. Airflow? Look at women’s sleeves either non existent or at minimum shorter. The fabric is always more see through. You have to be able to see your bra why? Women don’t even realize what they’re doing when they put on their clothes, heels, etc. and don’t get me started on makeup. Your not objects to be looked at yet you spend how much time and money on makeup to change your appearance? I’ve known women who won’t leave the house without makeup. “Be who you are.” “Be yourself.” You know all that crap you teach your kids that you don’t really believe. Studies of men’s brains have confirmed it. Men see women as objects. That part of the brain is triggered. Same part of the brain when they see a Ferrari. A true feminist would look more like an Amish woman than a slut in booty shorts, boobs hanging out holding some pro abortion sign.

No John. Many quaint villages included. Places where the birds replaced traffic sounds. Really it is all about attitude. Since I have cruised around the world, taken trains across Europe, taken bus tours in almost every continent, I am totally at ease wearing a skirt or a dress. In fact, I have donated all of my pants and shorts to charity since I never want to experience ever again wearing a garment with a crotch seam. I have forgotten what it feels like wearing pants or shorts. I have received compliments mostly from women from Russia to Peru to Alaska to Australia. Just manly courage, John, and a totally masculine attitude. Break out of your fashion prison. Miniskirts are the best way to achieve comfort.

John from UK on May 21, 2018:

Well done, kaf9282 - all luck of the draw, I suppose. Did you stick to cities on your tour?

kaf9292 on May 20, 2018:

I can't understand John's comment since I have worn miniskirts all across Europe. Most recently for two weeks on a land tour around Ireland and Northern Ireland. No adverse reactions whatsoever.

John from UK on May 20, 2018:

I am a male with nice legs, and I love the feeling of freedom that comes with wearing a short skirt. But the British are so uptight and judgmental about other people's business, that I dare not wear them in my home town.

Zach on May 19, 2018:

Nice “reasons”, it’s obvious you all are thots trying to make guys get a boner, girls do it at my school all the time, it’s gets really old when you guys think you do it for other reasons....wear it appropriately you thots

Krystal on April 08, 2018:

I hate to wear Uniforms next year for school and they are making the girl wear mini skirts

Gsd on February 25, 2018:

It’s individual’s choice. But in my opinion, it’s because of male dominance and it was forced when it all began, but Now it became fashion. Tell me, why men dont wearing skirts or clothes which were meant for women. Why we see them differently if they wore one. Why it was considered disgraceful for a man to wear women’s clothing. I heard somewhere there that women weren’t allowed to wore men’s clothing because otherwise they will took over the world. The job which was forced on women, was to carry child and please men in whatever way they want. What was need at that time, now became fashion.

Patagoniakid on February 21, 2018:

After several years of wearing various mini / micro mini skirts I can definitely say a short skirt is more comfortable than any type of shorts. Especially for males... No frigging crotch binding inseams, cooler than shorts, and if really short freedom of movement is outstanding.

I see practicality is the issue not some fettish, or sexual turn on, nor cross dressing. Men will have the exact same issues as women have in a short skirt and undies / panties eliminate the problem. (the goods are covered so nothing to see. You see more and in detail at the beach and no one cares).

Short skirts are really comfortable for driving long distances and when sitting. Better than anything else. (Be cCareful of what you sit on of course)

John from UK on February 21, 2018:

Agreed - I love getting a tan on all of each of my legs, not just the bit below the knees, as is the case with men's shorts - way too baggy for me.

n0heq@arrl.net on February 20, 2018:

May I offer a different perspective? Both men and women who take care of their bodies may have beautiful legs; however, that has nothing to do the reasons that I wear miniskirts. Freedom of movement is my reason as is the ability to get a great suntan over almost all of my legs.

Mbalyenhle Sogar on February 19, 2018:

i think girls wear shorts skirt because they know that they have beautiful legs so what is the use of hiding them. Most of males think that we as girls we wear shorts because we want to attract them, nah they are mistaken we don`t even care about them

n0heq@arrl.net on February 17, 2018:

Remember that women had lots of negative reactions when they first started wearing trousers, pants or shorts in public. Women did not wimp out by returning to skirts or dresses. Men should act like men with the determination to make their own decisions. We don't need our neighbor's permission to choose our daily attire. Some people simply resist any form of change since it takes them out of their comfort zone. Men can and should control their own bodies.

John from UK on February 16, 2018:

We need a revolution in society's attitudes, that will allow people to be themselves. I'd love to wear skirts all the time, at least in summer, but where I live (small town, very backward part of a conservative anyway country) that just wouldn't be tolerated. I have bought quite a few but can only wear when away in some place where nobody knows me. I get silly remarks just for wearing shorts, even got reported to my wife by a church member who had seen me in town and was disgusted!

John from UK on February 16, 2018:

I love wearing mini-skirts. I love the feeling of uncluttered freedom, and I've got nice legs despite being a man!

Patagoniakid on July 04, 2017:

Simone's article "Five Reasons to Wear Short Skirts" was on the money! Good job.

I'm a guy yet late in life tried on a mini skirt on a hot summer day and was sold! I have no idea why men don't wear them. I can relate to and verify every point you made! I highly prefer a short stretch denim cargo mini skirt to shorts and don't care what others think. Hopefully some day soon men will have the freedom women have...

john on July 03, 2017:

I decided at 60 I no longer cared what people thought so I put on a blouse and a short skirt necklace

And no make up. Packed up my purse and went shopping. So what you may ask except that I am a a man and made no effort to "pass" as a women. I scared shi#"×÷÷! When I got out of my car I held my head high, and much to my surprise I had a great time what a rush and yes I did get compliments on my great legs!! Time is short but never miss a opportunity to make up for lost time !

Bhanu on November 29, 2016:

The same 'mobility ', comfort and happiness are also equally entitled on boys, why shouldn't they wear skin tight shorts to school and office?

Darlene on October 19, 2016:

I live for Summer, as in winter (even in So.California) the weather year around is condusive of short skirts (Like I mean way short short) or Denim SHORTY SHORTS. I usuallt get a 4" to 5" critch and roll them into a "Boy Cuff" as I look in the mirror it is so sexy and comfortable, as usually rolled cuffs keep the shorts from showing extra cheeks. I so dislike sleeze, but love my legs, so short shorts or micro/mini skirts are my life. I never wear long pants and never a skirt longer than just long enough to be safe. Yes the wind sometimes rules, then I have my shorty shorts (my dad calls Hot Pants) usually a low rise with a nice belt to cut my middle, as I am 6' tall.

I would like to start a I ONLY WEAR SHORT SHORTS (aka Hot Pants) or mini/micro skirts all year long. Summer, spring, fall or winter. I even wore my Hot Pants on a snow day in Big Bear to our cabin. Wow did I stay warm with all the attention. NO, I don't get cold, but lots of looks. I love the attention.

Anybody wanna start a I ONLY wear shorts & mini's CLUB, answer with a contact and we will be in touch and start something new. California is a great place to spawn this trend. Why cover up too soon. The fad will fade as time takes away my looks. I'm still in my 20's. When will I give up this silliness? Maybe NEVER if I look good, but I think 40. Darlene

Patagoniakid on August 05, 2016:

I would think that women would encourage men to wear short skirts! It would remove the uniqueness as related to women. Being "common" the sexiness as related to just women would fade. Women would better enjoy them in the presence of men if they also wore them like they do pants now.

Men can wear short (mini and micro mini) skirts with the same issues women have with short skirts...as long as you wear undies there is nothing to see so don't sweat an inadvertent flash now and then because they happen but who cares?... your covered!

Women should also realize it takes a sexually secure, non sexist, non homophobic guy to rock a short skirt...hummm.. perhaps they do know this because when wearing short skirts one gets more action than the jocks! Guys... start by wearing the micro mini's for running (they are the same length as men's running shorts at 10.5 to 12" long) and for hiking and lounging around the house...beats wearing pants for sure! Soon everyone will wear them!

David L Avery on August 05, 2016:

It is completely normal now for men and women. Some men still associate skirts and dresses with women although most women don't even wear them any longer, abandoning them for pants. Given that pants are certainly no longer an exclusive garment for men. I enjoy that freedom, strongly favoring skirts for their comfort and convenience. I'm thankful that women destroyed the gender barriers in clothing to give all of us guys the true freedom of choice.

Steve Harper on August 04, 2016:

You know I would love to see a movie made where it's in the future and everybody was wearing different type of clothes. Where it was completely normal for boys and men to be wearing skirts and dresses and still be wearing pants as well. Yes women and girls also kept wearing all their wonderful line of clothing they have been wearing. Yes just a movie where the dresses & skirts the guys were wearing were normal and no big thing.Everybody was just going about their business. To whatever plot the movie was about.

Johnb on July 06, 2016:

A nice dress or skirt on an attractive woman is very sexy although a nice dress on some women is also great. Sometimes a small amount of makeup aswell

Joanne on November 19, 2014:

Skirts are about femininity ! No matter what the length. When I put on a skirt, it makes me feel girly. Pants, jeans and shorts do not have that effect on me. I used to wear mini skirts all of the time and then maxi skirts took over my wardrobe, now I'm into the midi big time. Still wear jeans and shorts on occasion, but I prefer skirts or dresses especially on dates.

kaf9292 on July 17, 2014:

Short skirts are all about getting a nice nearly full-leg suntan while being as comfortable as possible without being completely nude. Real men also wear short skirts and have done so since the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Minifan on July 17, 2014:

Wearing short skirts, it ist the game of showing and hiding.

Impossible to turn away the eyes

Shorts are so vulgar

Long skirts are for fat old ladys

Trouthers for women who want to be a mas

Great hub, I love your take on short skirts! Myself that's all I really love to wear..there so comfortable and unconfining. Thank you for sharing!

Veronica on October 20, 2013:

I don't like male attention if I wear a short skirt. Most men think you wear them because you desperately want sex and will do it with the next man who croses your path

Patagoniakid on June 27, 2013:

I'm a guy who never thought about skirts for decades then tried one on! Wow...guys you don't know what you are missing. A "Mini Cargo Skirt" has more pockets than shorts, has belt loops and is plain and they come in all sorts of styles and materials and best of all... no friggin crotch seams for the first time ever makes these special and unlike any other clothing guys have! Freedom of movement is astounding! No tubes of cloth over the legs!! With a little research I found that leading clothing designers say there are no reasons for men not to wear skirts and men have worn skirts far longer than women throughout time. Clearly better suited for a male than a female so society has it backwards!

I also found wearing a skirt is a "Chick Magnet".... guys you will get more action than the local jocks...guaranteed! They will find you intriguing and know you don't have the homophobia and sexual insecurity most men have. Anyone with any sense knows gays don't wear skirts (only on TV and movies for an effect).

It's time for men to break out of their 150 year old+ fashion and adopt something new like women did with their more open minds when they adopted men's pants in a big way in the 1960's.

Still don't think you can do it? Check these guys in skirts and note they still look like guys just as women in pants still look like women:

http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/2206467... They are obviously NOT cross dressing trying to look like women. Just guys enjoying skirts!

Vic Torino on March 22, 2013:

I wear short skirts all the time and people laugh at me! Of course, I am a guy.

kaf9292 on August 06, 2012:

It is not superficial. It is totally about comfort. You don't need a perfect figure since that exists only in the mind of the beholder as an abstract concept. In other words, no one can please millions of different expectations simultaneously. The notions of too fat, too old, too tall, etc. are fully subjective. Personally I have seen many who look much better, IMHO of course, in a short skirt than when wearing shorts or capri pants. As a married man I don't need anyone's permission except that of my wife to wear a miniskirt. When she is happy, so am I. I don't need a perfect body (whatever that really is) to go to a nude beach either!

Skirts come in a myriad of silhouettes, not all of which are form fitting. Just as with all clothing a skirt is selected based upon the weather & your planned activities. A short skirt is a clothing choice that doesn't require the approval of the entire universe!!!!!

BS on August 06, 2012:

I am surprisedthere isn't even one negative comment for such a superficial writying!

Short skirts - they are not only comfortable (compare with shorts please!) but also very revealing. They are usually tight and lift up, exposing your underwear. If you wear A-shaped one, be careful if its windy! Short skirts and exercise? For those who are desperate for male attention and want to appear ''sexy'' which is stupid. Aesthetic? Try it with thick fat legs and cellulite! I doubt it's very aesthetic. So ladies if you are not happy with your legs, why emphasize your worst part with skirts even more?

Simone, your arguments are very unconvincing it's strange that some people buy this nonsense!

Sexy Diva on April 15, 2012:

I'm a man that likes wearing short skirts in the summer a lot and in the winter when I go to the laundromat. when I wear short skirts in public I don't care what people think. I like wearing them more than pants because they are comfortable. People should understand that there are men that like to wear short skirts in public and they shouldn't be judged. I feel if you want to wear a short skirt it shouldn't matter how old you are and body type and if you are a male or female. Wear the short skirt if it make you happy and comfortable and do it because you want to and not for someone else. Women wear the short skirts because you want to and not for men. I support any man or female that likes wearing short skirts in any season like me.

Sexy Diva on April 14, 2012:

kaf9292 on March 14, 2012:

Short skirts are just plain comfortable since they can be worn without the restrictions placed upon wearing a loincloth. I wear them with sandals even in the winter. The compliments are just a bonus. Reasons to wear a short skirt are so numerous I prefer a brief listing of maybe five things that shouldn't be tried while wearing a short skirt: Gymnastics, roofing, changing a flat tire on a gravel road, sitting on a bar stool or climbing steep stairs while wearing a thong.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on March 14, 2012:

Whaaa? Seriously kschimmel? They're selling short skirts at Sam's Club? Holy cow, that sure is a reason to avoid 'em! Oh wait... ooooh... you saw a short skirt disaster. kaf9292 on March 04, 2012:

Comfort is what got me hooked. After many years of believing that I couldn't wear a skirt just because I am a man I tried it upon a dare from my daughter. With the blessing of a wife who wears pants, skirts or dresses, I too joined the world of 21st Century equality. It is the comfort factor. Yes, lots of pockets, big belt loops & a coordinated selection of shirts & shoes lets me blend into my surroundings. After exercising my new clothing freedom that has been enjoyed for decades by women, I have donated all of my pants & jeans to charity with some even going to my same-sized female relatives. It is a decision that I am happy to have made 15 years ago. I am just a man who still looks very masculine but also a man who isn't adjusting those irritating seams any longer.

Kimberly Schimmel from North Carolina, USA on February 28, 2012:

I saw a short skirt at Sam's Club today that was a reason NOT to wear one, though. If you have an ample behind, a skirt that just barely covers the fanny is not flattering. I do appreciate that this unknown person was wearing leggings under said skirt--it would have been far worse with a thong.

The important thing, Peggy W, is that you HAVE been there and done that! I know I won't always be wearing short skirts, but I'm glad that I'm doing it for at least a short time. It's a fun experience.

I'm sorry to hear that your short skirt won't see the light of day, QudsiaP1, because I'm sure you'd rock it well, but I'm still really glad you have it!

And LOL quicksand.

And brava, Amy Becherer! You're obviously a pro!!! I hope I might wear short skirts half as well as you do. And you're so right- they're not for anyone else but the wearer. And it's amazing how much positivity they can bring about!

Hmm- you make a good point about the upsides of ditching short skirts to save male pride, ahostagesituation. No guy has ever cared enough about me to be jealous, so I've never been in a position to consider not flaunting the short skirt look. I might change my ways if someone actually cared. Or not. We'll see! But I can totally understand how it is rather like a compliment. And why someone NOT caring might be a bit insulting.

I'm glad you've held on to some of your skirts, thoughtforce. Even if pants are the norm, it's nice to mix things up from time to time!

How great of you to write an article for the benefit of the skirt! I like skirts but I don’t wear mini skirts any more :) Instead I prefer them a little bit longer but yet not a long skirt. During many years I didn’t wear pants or jeans, I just had them when I worked in the garden! Then the pants started to sneak up on me and now I am afraid they have more or less won the battle :) I am used to them now and skirts do not fit my job either so I can only have them during my free time. But the skirts are still there, ready to wear! And I do agree, women do not wear skirts for the sake of men :) Thanks for the great read, and the inspiration. Keep on wearing those mini skirts! Tina

Mrs Roussou on April 28, 2011:

Simone, I know few things more useless than male pride, but those territorial instincts run pretty deep. I decided a while back that I prefer it that way. Would you want your guy to take the position, "oh sure, man, say what you want to her...hell, put your hands on her if you want. Have at it, buddy!" I don't know too many non-bisexual guys who could handle that. I am 100 percent sure I would not want that, despite how annoying male pride can be. But since you already rock a lot of mini skirts, it would be a shame to throw them out...;-).

At my age, you bet I was flattered! So, although I got a lot of attention from predominently men, women came up to me and conmplimented me regularly, too. Ultimately, everyone likes positive, upbeat encounters. I like the positive attention, smiles, and power of turning heads. I wear them for me! This was a fun read based on true facts!

QudsiaP1 on April 28, 2011:

I have inexplicably fallen in love with you for explaining why must short skirts gain vast approval. Now only if I could convince the people of my country!

Bah, wearing jeans and long skirts give me the drooled lace stares so well if I were to wear a short skirt anywhere outside the diameter of my room, well let us just say it would be quite a unique experience. So for now I prance around in my room wearing my favourite short skirt, which much to the dismay of my beloved, will never really grace the day of light.

Hahaa, I'm sure short skirts abound in Brazil, Ancillotti! Lucky you! And hey, at least you've got a girlfriend who can wear them well, right? Other men will just be jealous of YOU for having such a cool girlfriend!

Mm- good point ahostagesituation. I suppose since I have never been in a serious relationship, I've never had a fight about short skirts, but I can see how they might be an issue.... though I'd be hard pressed to give miniskirts up just for a guy's pride!

And hahaha Hyphenbird - I bet you can STILL rock short skirts! But hey- even that you wore them when you really felt like it means you know how to wear them well!

Now quicksand, I find philosophy much more fun than photos. Besides, I'm lazy. But I'll be sure to include more photos in my next short skirt Hub ;)

And I'm glad to have added to your girl-in-short-skirt-appreciation, Rgerard! Those girls sure know what they're doing, believe me.

There's no CHANCE that you learned too much from this Hub, PETER LUMETTA, I'm only getting STARTED on the subject!

I'm glad you maximized your short skirt opportunity Stephanie Henkel - I hope every girl does! I've heard about regrets on all sorts of things, but never have I heard a woman express anything aside from nostalgia for the short skirts she once wore.

And thanks for reading stefancando - just doing my civic duty ;)

DRAT, lukecore! I missed the trend by just four years!!! I'm never good with these things =___=

I'm with you on jeans getting boring, M. Everest. But thankfully there are skirts to flatter all sorts of bodies, styles, climates, and situations!

Thanks for reading, A.A. Zavala.

And you know it's true, Andrew Gubb! And if one has an excuse to wear loin cloths, one ought not to pass it up!

Andrew Gubb from Barcelona, Spain on April 27, 2011:

"In all honesty, they are the closest modern alternative to loin cloths"

Loved this bit! :)

Augustine A Zavala from Texas on April 27, 2011:

You had me at short skirts. Thank you for sharing.

M. Everest from Northern California on April 27, 2011:

Sigh. My legs just aren't what they used to be! But I will definitely try to wear more skirts now, period. Because jeans are just getting boring! Great hub! ;)

Luke Chant from Manchester on April 27, 2011:

Giant goose costume you say? Vogue says that's the in style for this summer!

stefancando from Iasi on April 27, 2011:

These is really nice :) Thanks for telling it as it is for us guys to understand.

Stephanie Henkel from USA on April 27, 2011:

I love it!!! Yes, wear short skirts while you still can, ladies! As you point out, time is fleeting, and we should enjoy wearing short skirts while we can. I don't regret a moment of it (especially since my time is past...) Great hub, Simone!

PETER LUMETTA from KENAI, ALAKSA on April 27, 2011:

See your never to old to learn something new. Maybe I learned more than I wanted to but what the heck. Good HUB

Peter

Rgerard from Santa Barbara, California by way of Los Angeles on April 26, 2011:

This was very insightful. The next time I see a girl in a short skirt (probably tomorrow) not only will I appreciate her beauty (I always do) but I will also take into consideration all the great things she can do in that short skirt! ;)

quicksand on April 26, 2011:

More pix please!

Brenda Barnes from America-Broken But Still Beautiful on April 26, 2011:

I used to wear short skirts unti I got old and fat. They made my very short legs look longer. I love this Hub.

Mrs Roussou on April 26, 2011:

I'm laughing out loud at short skirts as "modern alternative to loin cloth." I definitely agree that women do not necessarily wear a short skirt for men...of course not. Unfortunately though, many a straight man did not get that memo. Lots of short skirts are more casual than sexy, but a short skirt can be an argument waiting to happen in a relationship. Who knows? Either way, I love this hub, and I love the skirts in this hub!

Ancillotti from Brasil, Vitoria - ES on April 26, 2011:

Hello, Simon! Although I liked the Hub, I confess I am not a fan of my girlfriend using short skirt. Although her stay beautiful hilltop lot of jealous of him looking man! I hope she does not read your Hub and go shopping to use more short skirts because here in Brazil it is very easy to find! Thanks!
