Tipping Your Barber

So, going for a haircut, are we? Good; there are few feelings more satisfying than going to the barbers and getting a classic haircut.

Hairstyling is always a good way to make you feel good about yourself, and it can play a leading role in making you generally feel more positive. When you look in the mirror and see a stylish fade, you know that you are onto a winner. However, if you want to make sure you always get the best cut, you want to have a barber you go to each time.

Having your own choice of barber means they soon work out exactly what you are looking for in terms of style. They get to know your quirks, and they also get to know your chatter. Now, they can stop asking you the same generic questions, and over time, you can learn a good bit about them. This is a wise choice as having a barber whom you have a rapport with and can trust is very important.

When the job is done, though, and they ring you up at the till, you want to make sure you offer them a tip that feels like a fair reflection of their efforts. With that in mind, then, you might be wondering how much do you tip a barber?

The challenge is that barber tips are quite hard to work out. You want to find a fair value, so what works for most barbers?

Tipping is important!

Should You Tip Your Barber?

The short answer? Yes, absolutely!

The long answer? Yes, it is the right thing to do. A barber deserves you to respect their craft and to see the work that they do as worthwhile. If you are someone who is unsure about tipping a barber, then just ask yourself this: could you do the same quality of cutting yourself? Could you even buy a decent pair of clippers for this cost?

This is something to focus on, as the quality of work that a barber does can be priceless to your look. You can stick on the suave and stylish suit, but if you walk about with straggly hair and a messy beard, you won’t look as good as you could. Get a barber to tidy you up, though, and you can look a million bucks!

So, if you are wondering whether or not you should tip a barber, then the simple answer is yes. You should give them the respect their work deserves, and you should ensure they are properly compensated for the work they do. A barber should always be tipped purely because the work they do is always a good value for money.

You cannot cut your own hair without hundreds of hours of training and a lot of expensive hair-cutting tools. A barber has all of this, and in less than an hour, could have you looking glorious.

How Much Do You Tip a Barber?

Typically, the cost of tipping a barber is dependent on the service provided. If you go for a standard haircut, you should probably simply round up whatever the cost is; if your haircut costs you $17.50, then round it up to $20, etc.

However, for a more structured cost, anything from 15% to 20% should be enough for most barbers to be delighted. If you are merely happy with the result, then around 15% is still seen as fair compensation for their skill and time. If you are delighted, though, going to 20-25% should make a good investment for the future.

What do we mean by investment? The same as we noted above. A barber will be able to better understand you, your hair, and how you try to look if you simply give them a better tip. They will put more effort in, they will grow to understand what you like, and they will be more focused on the end result.

Especially if you are in the process of a long-term hair change – such as growing your hair out – it makes sense to go to the same barber as much as you can. If that is the case, then you should learn how much to tip that barber. The longer you are going to them, the more comfortable you will both become. However, a little tip on top does a fine job of cementing that positive and productive relationship.

So, how much do you tip a barber? Around 15-20% should be suitable for any barber.

Tips can come in more forms than just money!

Tipping Alternatives

It's not just money that you can tip your barber with; if you are particularly close, you can treat them to tickets to see their favorite sports team or a voucher for a shop you know they like. It's the thought that counts, and after getting to know your barber, you will get a better idea of what makes sense for you and for them.

Likewise, though, know that you don't have to tip your barber if you are not happy with the services; it's totally up to you. You can ultimately decide if you have had a good experience or not and are happy with the outcome, then you can determine whether it is appropriate to go ahead with the tip.

It goes without saying that any barber should be hugely appreciative of any tip or even gift that comes their way, as you have gone above and beyond for them to reward them. If you don't think they are all that appreciative, then maybe next time, it is not something you feel you should do going forward. I think it becomes a little bit of an issue when they start to automatically expect tips from you. So I recommend only really rewarding when they have gone the extra mile in their service.

Let us know your thoughts. Do you tip your barber? If so, how much and why? Likewise, if not, why not? Is there some happy medium that you think is appropriate? We would really appreciate hearing your thoughts in the comments section just below.

Opening Your Own Hair Salon

How do you make the most out of your beautician license? By matching it with a business license and opening your own salon.

If you are in the process of opening a hair salon, you’ll want to have an appealing name to go with it.

Let’s face it, there are hair salons all over the place, and competition is tough. Having a great name might just be the deciding factor for a customer to go to your salon.

When brainstorming hair salon names, consider the following tips to help you along:

How to Name a Business

Brainstorming Names for Your Hair Salon

 • Consider your audience: Are you aiming to be that hip salon all the youngsters are talking about, or that salon that all the sweet, little, old ladies go to for their monthly perms? Or perhaps you are aiming for something right in between. Whatever the case, keep your audience in mind when choosing your name.
 • Use hair-related verbs: What do you do to hair? A few words that come to mind are color, dye, cut, trim, style, blow dry, perm, and curl. Using a verb in your hair salon name will emphasize what you do.
 • Use rhymes: We all know that rhymes are very catchy, and using one in your hair salon name can help a customer or passerby remember the name for future business.
 • Use common sense: Common sense goes a long way when naming a business. You want your business to stand out, and if your hair salon name sounds similar to another, it could cost you business!
 • Use your specialty: Is there an aspect of hair that you are really good at? Let the world know by including a reference to your specialty in your business name!
 • Use your name: This is your business and everyone should know it. Maybe you're one of the lucky ones and have a name that is easy to play on or rhyme with. Just try it and see!

Remember to be as creative as possible with the name because you want current and potential customers to remember it and not get it confused with a competitor!

Still Can't Decide on a Name?

As you can see, you can come up with an abundance of good names for your salon.

Perhaps you are still having a hard time thinking of a good name, or maybe you are stuck between a few different ones. If this sounds familiar, try the following ideas:

 • Have a naming party. Invite some friends and family over for food and refreshments, and maybe even a trim on the house, and have them help you brainstorm potential names for your hair salon. People are full of ideas so it never hurts to get their opinion.
 • Survey your audience. Create a survey on a website such assurveymonkey.com, post a question to Yahoo! Answers, or use social networking to poll the public to help you to find out what appeals most to the general public.
 • Design a logo. If you are a visual thinker and have a design in mind, try putting that design on paper with potential names to see what looks best. This is your brand, so make it awesome.
 • Flip a coin. Stuck between two names? Flip a coin on it!

Still can’t think of an appropriate name? No problem. Have a snack, slap some color on your head, and read some hair magazines for more inspiration. Relaxation is key. Sleep on it if you need to, it might even come to you in your dreams!

Importance of Salon Client Consultations

Client consultations are an important process in any business. For every hairstylist, a successful consultation plays an important role because it allows you to gather information from your client, understand their goals for hair and makeup, and recommend the right products.

The objective of a client consultation is to discover your client's needs and concerns by making them feel comfortable so you can offer them the best help and advice. However, sometimes clients don’t speak up about their concerns, and they may take time to trust you.

In situations like these, you can follow these 15 tips to perform a successful client consultation in your beauty salon and increase their involvement and responsiveness during the consultation process.

Tips for a Successful Client Consultation

 1. Listen to your client attentively and maintain eye contact throughout the consultation.
 2. While greeting your clients, shake hands with them or feel their hair because touching can create an instant positive connection with the client.
 3. While consulting your client, make sure you sit next to them and not talk by looking in the mirror.
 4. Keep the position of your chair lower than the eye level of your client. This is important to make them comfortable and also prevents them from getting intimidated.
 5. Find out where the client heard about you or your salon.
 6. Ask the client what he or she likes about their hair.
 7. Ask the client about their expectations of you and the salon.
 8. Find out how the client cares for his or her own hair.
 9. Ask the client for permission before you begin cutting the hair. This makes the client confident about you and your salon and is the “secret” behind the success of a stylist.
 10. If any service is going to take a little longer time, make sure the client knows where the bathroom is.
 11. Before starting any service, take them to the shampoo bowl because a quality shampoo can add great value to the client’s visit.
 12. After the job is done, make sure you thank your client. You can also send them thank you cards via email or mail.
 13. Call clients after making major changes to their hair and inquire about the feedback they received.
 14. Always ask clients for referrals. This helps to grow your business quickly.
 15. Update your consultations periodically.

Conclusion

Client consultation plays an important part in the growth of your beauty salon business. Ideally, professional managers should perform this process and encourage clients to participate willingly in the process, while understanding their concerns and providing the right response. If done correctly, you can actively engage with your clients and win their trust, influence their decision making, and turn them into evangelists of your salon.

Here's What Women Want. From Their Hairstylists, That Is!

Hairdressers need to listen and "read" their clients in order to understand their needs.

Are You Keeping Your Hair Salon Customers Satisfied?

Do you want to build a large and faithful group of clients for your hair salon?

Some hairdressers wonder why they lose clients, or why they can't seem to grow their business.

Although there are many reasons women leave relationships, there are only a few main reasons why women leave (or don't return) to a hairdresser.

If you know what a woman wants from her hairdresser, she will be a loyal client for years to come and will refer all her friends.

Follow these tips to do your best work, keep your salon clients happy, and keep them coming back for more.

Your Hair Client Will Tell You What She Wants

You might have to ask a few questions, but if you listen to your hair customers, you'll know what they need from you.

jdurham via morgueFile Free License

How to Listen to Your Hair Salon Clients

You may be an expert in hair styling, but the only person who is an 'expert' in a particular head of hair is the woman (or man) who wears it.

Listen to what your client tells you about her hair, and believe her. You may have been taught in stylist school that a certain cut or blow-dry angle will produce specific results. But the person sitting in your chair knows how her hair behaves, and it may not fit the cookie-cutter mold you were taught.

Few things are more annoying to a hair client than having a hairdresser tell them they're wrong when they try to (helpfully) let you know the tricks and stubborn behaviors of their own hair.

Not all fine hair is the same, not all curly hair behaves the same, and one person's straight hair may not respond the way others do.

Similarly, color formulas aren't one-size-fits-all. If your client tells you her hair goes red, believe her. If she says she has a lot of breakage (or feels like she's 'losing her hair,') take care when timing the color processing so you don't make matters worse.

If your client asks for a certain style or cut, you can suggest some new ideas, but don't overrule her. I once asked for a certain style, and the hairstylist overruled me and said she didn't want to do that; I let her push me around, but I regret I didn't have my hair styled the way I wanted it for that particular event.

Perhaps your client isn't explaining herself in a way you understand (she hasn't learned the lingo you know, remember?). Take a few minutes to make certain you heard her correctly.

Phrase her statement back to her in slightly different words. For example, if she says she wants more streaks in her hair, ask her, "Are you saying you prefer the highlights in your hair to be more distinct?" That one question can tell you if she wants her streaks to stand out more ("chunky") rather than being blended, or if she's asking you to make her hair lighter all over. There's a big difference in those two things.

A few minutes of close listening can ensure good results when she leaves the salon, and a return visit the next time she needs a cut and color.

Get the Best Hair-Cutting Shears You Can Afford

Why are good scissors important to a hair stylist?

You will be cutting hair all day long, five or more days a week. Your salon scissors will get a workout far more than other shears you might own (you know, those things you pull out from the kitchen drawer to open a package of chips?). Your scissors need to hold up to the constant workout.

You will be cutting every imaginable type of hair, and you'll be angling the cut of the style in various ways. You can't afford to use scissors that don't leave a good cut.

Good hair shears hold up for many years; they can be sharpened repeatedly, repaired, and kept in great shape. They're an investment in your career.

There are many great brands to choose from yes, you might get sticker shock when you spring for a leading manufacturer, but when you find a brand you like, you'll be happy with the investment.

Kamisori Emerald is a good choice, as is their entire line of hair scissors. There are various lengths to choose from, depending on how large your cutting hand is or how you hold your shears when you cut hair.

If you're left-handed, you'll find Kamisori shears designed to accommodate that as well.

Other great brands include AuPolus, Feng Chun, Shark Fin, and Kenchii. All good brands of hair shears have scissors for lefties or righties, and offer choices in the lengths and angles of the blades.

You'll also want to find a good blowdryer, the best brushes and combs, and a flatiron that you feel comfortable using on all types of hair.

Good Hairdressers Sell Themselves, Not Hair Products

Women want to believe they can buy the styling products you used and get the same great results you just gave them when they go home, but try to avoid pushing products that they really may not need.

Ask your client what products she still has at home before telling her she will magically reproduce your skills if she only buys a tube of this or a bottle of that. Respect her budget, and offer suggestions on how she can use up one of the zillion bottles she has in her cabinet before investing in yet more of the stuff.

Tell her to bring in the products so you can give her tips on using them. This personalized service will go a long way to building trust and loyalty.

Most woman have dozens of jars, tubes and bottles of unused or partially used hair products; they really don't need to buy more goop, but they do need some guidance on how to get the best results with what they have on hand.

Excellent Hairstyling Service Starts at the Appointment Desk

Make sure the scheduler in your salon knows your pace and your preferred timing for hair appointments.

How to Improve Your Service to Salon Hair Clients

It's common practice for hairstylists to book clients on top of other appointments and try to work in a cut or blow-dry while another client's hair is color-processing.

This can work, but it can also backfire. If you leave clients under the dryer (heat processing) as a babysitter while you are doing cuts for other clients, you're probably overusing the dryer and damaging her hair.

If your client tells you she has breakage and worries about the heat, honor that concern and don't put her under the dryer to process. Sure, this means you may have to attend to her sooner than you planned, but, after all, she is paying you for your service, isn't she?

Don't engage in conversations with others while you're cutting or applying color to your client. Some hairdressers treat their salon like a party room and allow anyone to interrupt them while they're working on a client. This is rude, inconsiderate, and sends a message that you don't respect the person in your chair.

If others try to interrupt you while you're working, ask them to wait a few minutes so you can finish what you're doing.

What About You?

Hair Clients Don't Like to Wait

Monitor your pace and set your appointment book to reflect the amount of time you actually need for each client.

If your clients mention they've had to wait, it's a sign you may be overbooking or getting distracted while you work. Listen to the clients and you'll see where you need to tweak things or adjust the timing of your appointments.

Chances are, your clients took time off from work or family needs to make their appointments, and they may even have paid a babysitter. If you consistently run an hour behind, it costs them money. Respect their time, and they'll respect yours.

Never, ever, show preference for one client's time over another. I once saw a hairdresser ask one client (who had arrived early and been waiting patiently) to wait while she took another person who had just arrived. She framed it by saying she could 'give her better service.' The hairdresser had arrived late and clearly showed preferential treatment to Client #2, who was a wealthy businesswoman but had just arrived.

The hairdresser lost the business of the first client, and other staff members reported the incident to the salon's investors.

If there's been an unavoidable delay, acknowledge it, apologize and offer some small consideration to make up for it. Give her a bottle of product (a few dollars of shampoo or a jar of scented cream may save you hundreds in lost business), or reduce your fee slightly for that day.

Your apology will let her know you care about her as a person, that you realize her time is valuable, and that delays aren't your normal way of doing business.

Do You Charge Too Much for Hairstyling?

Every market and every salon is different, and every stylist can command his or her own fees.

But the economy can fluctuate, and if your fees are already pretty hefty, don't raise them needlessly.

Some people have left good hairdressers to whom they have been paying high fees (which makes it appear they don't mind paying for expensive services) when there's been an increase. If you raise your fees by $20 and drive off three customers who come in every six weeks, and who refer customers to you, have you made a good business decision? Probably not!

Are you raising fees on someone who tips you well? If she regularly tips $10-$20, she is already paying a higher fee. If she leaves due to an increase, you've lost the original fee plus the tip.

Learn What Is Trending in Haircuts and Styles

A huge issue for many women is when they go to their hairdresser wanting a new color technique or a style that is currently popular, and the hairdresser has not yet learned to do it.

You may have clients who love the same style they've had for years (and they could use an update), but don't assume that the way 'you've always done it' works for everyone.

Most women will want their color applied with foils rather than a cap, for the obvious reasons that there's less breakage, less pain, and more flexibility in creating certain effects with the color.

Sure, those courses are expensive, and they may take more time, but they will pay off in making clients happy and in continued business.

You would not want to go to an accountant who was not up on current tax law, so why would you expect your hair clients to go to a stylist who doesn't know how to keep up with the trends?

AWESOME STYLIST on April 08, 2016:

Just to add to my last rant:)) we are all human:)

If you want a good haircut/stylist, and you are out and about, and you see a cut and or color that you love, please stop and ask that person who their stylist is, more than likely they will be willing to share.. This way you have already seen a sample of their work and have a bit of an idea as to what to expect! This is how I have built my clientele, one at a time. A clients hair -is a stylists advertising! Pick a stylist that is INTO their work.. and someone who is willing to "give" you a 15 minute consult BEFORE you book your appointment so you can decide if this is the stylist for you. Also, they are not there to make friends and chat you up. A serious and thorough consultation is needed, and hopefully they are understanding what you are saying, so make sure communication is absolutely clear. Repeat yourself if you feel its needed. your stylist should understand and be patient. Communication is key!! If your stylist is chatting too much when cutting or doing a complicated color, kindly say to him/her that you would appreciate it if they would not chat.. I know it tough to do, but it is for your benefit:) I personally find it a lot easier to not have to entertain while I work.. it is multitasking. If you are cutting a fabric for a tailored dress, would you be waving your arms around and talking about the new cabin at the lake.. or whatever??? Highly unlikely!! There ARE good Stylists out there... Good luck in your search everyone!

Lorie Nny. on October 13, 2015:

Hi.

I am a hairstylist, extremely seasoned, this has been very helpful. I do not claim to be a hair artist, if that was the case I would take your cut hair and frame it. We are sales people, that provide service. I like that you all of you are saying listen , listen, listen,,. you have given us the golden key. Now we just have to apply, the only hair cut I don't prefer to do is the mullet, but if that is what you wan to wear, by all means do. It's your hair, not mine.

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on March 02, 2013:

Hi, oohlala! It's great to get a comment from someone who's been there and understands! From what you've said here, I can see your clients are very lucky to have found you. Many thanks for commenting!

oohlala on March 01, 2013:

I am a humble hairdresser and can say I love this. I too cut my own hair and I own a salon. I train my girls however to listen and will be sharing this with them tomorrow. It's important for us to remember where we came from. There are no hair rock stars. Only artists... Be humble and listen. .. then they will come back. ;-)

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 16, 2012:

Thanks Just Ask Susan - hey, wouldn't it be interesting to keep count of the number of hairdressers various people have walked away from after just one visit? And wouldn't it also be interesting to know how many other potentially loyal clients have walked away from the same hairdressers for one reason or another? We should form a club or something. BTW - I've had issues with hair that holds the red, too, and have had many hairdressers more or less ignore my cautions. And then I've had to live with the red for weeks & weeks.

Susan Zutautas from Ontario, Canada on December 16, 2012:

Have had a few bad experiences. Once when I was getting streaks put in and I told her that I have a lot of red in my brown hair and need the color removed before the blonde goes in. Well she didn't listen and the streaks came out red. I lived with it but I never went back to her again.

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 08, 2012:

Hi, DDE - I know what you mean - I went through a period of several years when I cut my own hair, because I'd gotten so frustrated trying to find a good hairdresser. No wonder the hairdressers who are skilled and who pay attention to what people want get loyal clients who follow them from place to place.

Devika Primić from Dubrovnik, Croatia on December 08, 2012:

It can be frustrating in finding the a good or correct hairdresser the one who would style your hair the way you want it or like I fully understand. i sometimes cut my hair on my own as well.

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 01, 2012:

Yay!!! Congrats, Watergeek!

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 01, 2012:

Oh, I have definitely heard the "I know best" line, GoodLady! I sometimes think people need therapy when they've been subjected to that sort of controlling experience in the name of hair styling. Thanks for the votes and the share!

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 01, 2012:

Oh my - I am trying to picture how someone would use pipe cleaners to perm hair!!?? That sounds like a scary experience - and the ear infection could have been a disaster, Melovy!

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 01, 2012:

Thanks for reading and commenting, Carol - when a hairdresser messes up, you have to live with it for quite a while!

Susette Horspool from Pasadena CA on December 01, 2012:

Hey Marcy - My "a" is green! :D

Penelope Hart from Rome, Italy on December 01, 2012:

I do hope every hairdresser in the world reads your hub! They are such a frustrating lot with their 'I know what's best for you' attitude (and scissors). Every time they make a mistake with my hair, it takes a year to grow back.

Maybe they do know best, but they aren't wearing the hair.

Voting and sharing and FBing too!

Yvonne Spence from UK on December 01, 2012:

I've had my fair share of hairdressers who didn't listen or did things I didn't like - the worst by far was when I worked as a fashion designer and agreed to be a model for a hairdresser to experiment on. They permed my hair with pipe cleaners, shaved my fringe (bangs) off and managed to get perming lotion in my ear which gave me an infection. But it was different to the way they'd done it on the last model, so they were happy. And luckily, working as a designer meant looking a bit weird wasn't the same issue it would have been had a worked in a bank!

Still, I was glad when my hair grew in again.

For years now I have lovely hairdressers who used organic products, and listens to what I want - or to what my daughters want.

Here's hoping your hub helps produce more of the latter type of hairdresser! Voted up.

carol stanley from Arizona on December 01, 2012:

Some really good information here..and I would hope hairdressers would read this. I can vouch for many of these issues and why I made changes.

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on December 01, 2012:

I think we may know some of the same hairdressers, Watergeek. I asked one stylist not to blow-dry my hair a certain direction, because it was so curly and would stay that way. She argued and said, no, it would give me 'lift' when brushed the opposite way. I explained that my hair doesn't work that way, but she kept at it. Afterward, it did exactly what I said it would, and took me weeks to 'untrain,' it. And the cut was the worst I've ever had.

Too bad more hairdressers don't realize clients speak with their pocketbooks.

Susette Horspool from Pasadena CA on November 30, 2012:

You are so right, Marcy. I had three experiences with hairdressers that turned me off. I went back to the first one, but not the next two.

The first one would not cut my hair the way I wanted it. She argued and finally asked the hairdresser next to her, when I wouldn't give in. He told her to do what I wanted. When she finished, she was surprised that it looked good and complimented me. That one I went back to.

The second one cut my hair totally differently from the way I'd asked for. It looked good, but didn't fit my lifestyle, requiring a recut every month or so. I couldn't afford it, so I just never went back to that salon.

The third one asked if I wanted color. I said no, just a cut and shampoo, so he shampooed my hair with a shampoo that made it look grey. I was savvy to marketing tricks and ticked off. A few days later when I shampooed my own hair, it went back to its normal dark blond color. I never went back to that salon either.

Marcy Goodfleisch (author) from Planet Earth on November 30, 2012:

Oh, Nettlemere, I know the feeling! I have cut my own hair in the past, but it just won't work for me to do that now. I firmly believe God gave us chemistry to protect us from knowing what our real hair color is. So I do use a hairdresser now, but I do understand the idea of giving up on the hassles and cutting your own!

Nettlemere from Burnley, Lancashire, UK on November 30, 2012:

I can't cope with having my hair hair dressed at all, I used to so dread going, partly for some of the reasons you outlined, that about 18 years ago I bit the bullet and cut my own hair. Problem solved!

Elegant Beauty Salon Names

Ladies love a traditional beauty parlor, and what better way to say elegance and class than with a beautiful name for your business? Your clients will love telling their friends where they get their hair done (or "set," as some still say.) That doesn't mean your beauty parlor can't have a fun or silly name. Also, throwing in some French words always counts for bonus points.

After all, they do carry sharp objects around and are in control of your looks. Follow these tips to keep your barber happy!

I am married, and I have kids. I used to be a barber in a former life.

Your barber can wear many hats, however, you don't want to make them mad. After all, they do carry sharp objects around and are in control of your looks. Follow these tips to keep your barber happy!

Manu M. on Unsplash

Your barber can be your best friend, your therapist, your doctor—hey, even sometimes a magician. But they can also be the devil if you make them mad. Now, I am not suggesting they might accidentally gouge you in the side of the head with their clippers or that they would even dare take a chunk out of your ear, but, if you want to guarantee a good haircut, keeping your barber happy is the best way to achieve this outcome.

So here, in no particular order, are the top ten ways to keep your barber happy. Whether you have a barber you see regularly or you go to a different one each time, this will ensure a good experience for both you and your barber.

1. Don’t Be Indecisive

Barbers will see several people during their shift. Typically, they work off commission so the more haircuts they do, the more money they make. They don’t want to rush you through your haircut, but they also don’t want to spend a half-hour with you while you try to decide what kind of haircut you want. If you know what you want, state it and let’s get down to business. If you are looking for a suggestion, ask them for their advice, but don’t ho and hum and take another 30 minutes to decide if what the barber suggested is the best style. It probably is since they know what is currently in style and with their experience, can probably tell you what will look good on you! On another note, if you already know how you want your haircut, know how to explain it. When the barber asks you the question, “How do you want your haircut?”, shorter is not an acceptable answer!

2. Take a Shower

I am going to say this again: TAKE A SHOWER! Practice good hygiene. There is nothing worse than having a person in your chair whose head feels like it has had an entire puck of pomade rubbed into their hair. And by pomade, I really mean grease. Most people who can afford a haircut can afford a bottle of shampoo. Even if you only use it once a month, use it before you come in for a haircut. We don’t want to put our hands through the greasy, slimy hair. Also, make sure you use deodorant and apply liberally. If you suffer from bad body odor, I don’t want to smell it. I definitely should not be able to smell it from across the room. Yes, the cape will hide some of the smell, but it will linger in the shop long after you are gone. In addition, I don’t suggest coming in for a haircut after you have just had the workout of your life. Obviously you care about your body, please take the time to wipe off the sweat before you come in. Besides the shower, make sure you brush your teeth as well. If we are washing your hair, we should not be able to smell your breakfast, your coffee, your lunch, or your last beer. If brushing your teeth is not available, please pop in a piece of gum.

3. Don’t Tell Me How to Do My Job

Last I checked, I went to school, and I got licensed to cut your hair. Tell me what you want, but don’t tell me how to get there. If you know how to cut your hair so well, do it yourself. Then afterwards, I will laugh at you because of how bad it is and then I will fix it!

4. Don’t Judge Me on Your Past Experiences

Just because you got a bad haircut the last time, doesn’t mean I will do the same thing. I can not guarantee I won’t have an off day, but I will give you the best possible haircut I can. I might possibly start having a bad day if you don’t adjust your attitude. So don’t judge me and let me do my job! Just remember, every barber and every stylist has a different way they cut hair. While none of these techniques are wrong, they do produce different results. If you are always receiving a bad haircut, try finding a stylist who works well with your hair. This will give you a better haircut experience and probably a better attitude toward your barber.

5. Don’t Expect Miracles

I am a barber, not a magician. If you have cowlicks, I can not change that. I can cut your hair so it lays as nice as possible. But if your bangs stand up straight because of a cowlick, I can not cut it so it lays down flat. Work with what kind of hair you have. There is no use in fighting against your hair because ultimately you are fighting with yourself. This is a fight were you will always lose! If you have thick, coarse hair, chances are good a shag cut will not look good on you. On a final note, if you are balding, I can offer you suggestions on how to make your hair look thicker based off the type of haircut, styling products, and alopecia prevention techniques, but I can not put hair back on your head. If you would like that, I will start chewing massive amounts of gum, stick it on top of your head, and use the hair I just cut off to reapply. I can guarantee the results will not last.

6. Adjust Your Attitude Before You Sit Down

If you are having a bad day, I will be your therapist. Talk to me and I will help cheer you up. Please, don’t take it out on me. I am not the reason you are having a bad day, but I can hopefully make it better. A smile can be contagious; a grumpy mood can be equally contagious. If you are in a pissy mood, it is almost certain that you will put me in a bad mood. If I am in a bad mood, I might accidentally snip your ear (just kidding)! Either way, it is unfair to growl at me because you had a bad day or because you are naturally just an irritable cranky person who walks around with a chip on your shoulder. I once had a client who came in complaining that no one in this world can drive decent (except obviously him). People like this need to take a chill pill. He ruined my night! So, next time, try growling a little less. Last time I checked, a lack of growling and an occasional smile has never killed anyone.

7. Try to Be Sociable

The most uncomfortable 20 minutes is having a guy in your chair that won’t say a word to you. It is even worse when you can barely get out how they want their hair cut. Answering every question I ask with a flat “Yes” or “No” when I am trying to start a conversation is just as annoying. Where I work, the guys get to watch TVs while they get their haircut. While most guys will talk to me, some prefer to just watch the TV in silence. Usually this is the time the commercial for Hemorrhoids, Erectile Dysfunction, or feminine itching airs on the TV. This can be rather uncomfortable. I would prefer having the conversation.

8. Sit Still and Sit Tall

Unless you are a young child or you have a disease that makes you uncontrollably shake, you have no excuse! It is difficult enough to give someone a haircut if they have difficult hair to work with, or cowlicks, or thick hair, but when you add a moving target that is a recipe for disaster. I have cut several children’s hair, and I will admit, it has turned up my fast clipper and scissor reactions. On the other hand, people understand if a child has a bad haircut. They usually peg it on them not sitting still. How do you explain a bad haircut on an adult who shook their head resulting in a divot from the clipper? You blame it on the barber! So do me a favor and if you are sitting in my chair, please sit still. I promise if you do, the torture will be over before you know it. On another note, sit tall and sit straight. This will help us make sure you have the best haircut possible. If you want to look good, this is sound advice to follow.

9. If You Are Suffering From a Communicable Disease, Don’t Get a Haircut

The definition of a communicable disease is an infectious disease that can be transmitted from one person to another. Therefore, if you have called into work because you are too sick, do not use this as a prime opportunity to get your haircut. First off, while I have built up an immune system because many others have come in and tried to pass me their colds, I don’t want you to be the one who can break my streak. Second off, if you have a child who was called in sick from school forcing you to stay home, that also is not a prime time for you to get a haircut. Bringing your sick child with you is no different then you being sick. In fact, if you do this, I will give you the parent of the year award. Go home and take care of your kid, like you should have been doing before you came in. Third off, chances are high that it is frowned upon for me to call in sick to work without finding someone to cover my shift. This is difficult. No one wants to come in on their day off and it is also hectic to move around my other request appointments. Therefore, I need to stay healthy. Therefore, if you are carrying something that could make me ill, stay home.

10. Tipping is Not a City in China

Believe it or not, people who cut hair are in the service industry. This means it is an industry which usually works for tips. While I am not saying you should tip someone who is grumpy or screwed up your hair, or in other words gave you poor customer service, you should however tip appropriately to the job they have done. Tipping is a way to say thank you. If they go above and beyond and absolutely made your day, reach a little deeper into your pockets and treat them right. Believe me, they will remember you the next time, and they will treat you like a king every time. On the other hand, if you are a bad tipper or a no tipper, you will also be remembered. Now if you don’t give a tip because you didn’t have a stellar experience, 95% of the time, the stylist will already know they screwed up. The messed up fact is, those who carry a wad of 100s, 50s, and 20s in their wallet, are more likely to be a bad or no tipper than the person who can’t afford the haircut in the first place. So remember, if you had a great experience and got a great cut, tip your barber appropriately (this does not mean $1). And if your parents didn’t teach you when it is appropriate to tip, I am telling you now, tipping your barber is appropriate. Now make sure you teach your children the right thing to do.

Now that I have gotten this off my chest, I hope I have done my part by educating the world on the proper etiquette for receiving a haircut. While you may find some of these funny, the truth is, I have personally experienced each and every one of these situations. So, now that you know where I stand (and probably many other barbers as well) go ahead, take a shower, brush your teeth and then go get a haircut! Oh yeah, and don’t forget to tip!

Total B.S., I only agree with one of ten and that is the sensible number nine. If this is the reason you are complaining as a stylist, maybe you need to look into that mirror that you face almost everyday and find happiness with your work or find new work. That person sitting in your chair is their for you to help them. I say my number one problem in a barber shop or salon is the other stylist. There is two types, one who loves the art of it and the other that complains about the people that keep their lights on.

FebeeChu on September 09, 2017:

You shouldn't judge people that can tip based on what and how much they have in their wallets. Everyone that Carries 20's 50's 100's bills aren't the same. It depends on each individual's heart and gratitude/generosity. Customers shouldn't feel the pressure to entertain their stylist by having chatting, some consider a barber shop like a Spa meaning no talking much, or phone distractions but relaxation. Well you say to customers don't expect too much from you, well, stop Expecting too much and pushing or you'll end up loosing your clients. Let them BE!! Except for the hygiene part I'm all for that!!!

Ryan Harris on July 03, 2017:

I believe it is very important to have communication when its come to getting your haircut. A lot of barbers don't communicate with their clients and as a result the haircut doesn't satisfy the client. Barbers need to learn how to communicate often with their clients to get the clients best haircut experience.

megan on May 31, 2017:

Right on comments. Been a barber 30 years,if someone has nassty, stinky hygience,I refuse to cut their hair.

ClaytonTheBarber on March 12, 2017:

Nice work! You nailed it.

ladyBarber86 on December 22, 2013:

I dont know if this was said but you forgot 'do not run into their chair uninvited" or something to that effect. I work at a shop where it is all walk-ins. We have customers that either run right to your chair before even a "hi how are you" has been uttered. Before I can even get to my chair they are either standing there in front of my station or already sitting in my chair. I find it rude. I'm not saying I don't appreciate the business. I really do, but I may not be ready. Or I might be done my shift even need to take care of a thing or two before I take you! Just something that I think every barber and even hairdresser can relate too.

Justin on November 06, 2013:

7. Try to be sociable:

Hmm, thought I was paying you for a service.

After working a 10hr day I prefer to get my cut and just relax. There is one girl at the salon/shop that always tries to force conversation such as "How many siblings? How old are you? What do you do?" Stuff that does not describe anything about who I am personally. I just politely say that I'd like to get my cut in silence and just relax. It's her tip.

Funny thing is both times I went to her, it was the exact same questions... If she's all that's avail I come back later.

It's not the customers job to keep you entertained. Your approach to #7 directly affects #10

@TToombs08 - This is definitely advice people can't live without! :)

Terrye Toombs from Somewhere between Heaven and Hell without a road map. on January 20, 2013:

Excellent advice, Stacy! I'll try to remember that the next time. ;)

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 14, 2012:

@sweetie1 - When I worked as a barber, we did mainly men's hair. While we couldn't turn away females, we geared ourselves toward the male population with our services. That being said, there was women who would rather have us do their hair, but most of them went to a beauty salon instead. However, we charged a better price and you got more money for your services. At a salon, they charged more and you were still expected to tip. That being said, as a person who has worked for tips, I never expect a tip - I think it is earned. But it does make it difficult when you are already paying so much to go above and beyond to tip someone out.

sweetie1 from India on December 10, 2012:

Hi Barbergirl,

I submitted the comment but i wanted to change just one word and then by mistake I clicked delete button. Anyways.. In Delhi the girls usually go to beauty parlours for the hair cut as we usually have unisex salons. It is usually owned by the lady barber herself who does your hair, facial, eye brows and everything. Yes many points are valid here and usually she becomes like a friend to you. But tipping well thats not in Delhi's culture. No one gives and no barber expects. Only people usually get tips are waiters and now since most restaurants are putting up 10% service charge apart from 12.5% service tax so they kind of put the tip in their bill and I am sure the waiters don't get that tip but customers have already paid in bill, so either tip is going down a lot or like many stopped paying more tips in the restaurants which put service charge.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 09, 2012:

@divacratus - I think it kind of depends on the individual stylist. For me, I am more of a social bug. I can also do well with ones that are quiet. What it comes to is the connection that two people have. That is the most important. And next, it is how the customer perceives the service. As always, the customer is the focus. We are there to make it a great experience! :)

Kalpana Iyer from India on December 07, 2012:

This gave me an insight into how barbers feel about us customers! :) I am guilty of not being too sociable while I'm getting a hair cut, I get lost in my own thoughts and I used to think that this would make the barber concentrate on his job without me distracting him. Looks like most barbers don't like their customers being quiet? Hmmm. Have to work on that now.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 07, 2012:

@seanorjohn - The clients I actually refer to as my friends are the ones that I have made a true connection with. They keep coming back and we have built a relationship. I enjoy their companionship as I am working. That being said, I still had to cut people's hair that I don't know. No worry's though - I believe in treating others the way that you would wish to be treated. This is just a bit of light-hearted humor. Sometimes when we are in customer service, the customers can crawl under your skin. But, we still have to take it to look the professional. Thanks for the vote up - I will keep you off my list of enemies ;)

seanorjohn on November 06, 2012:

Glad to hear you refer to your clients as friends. But you get me real worried about how you might deal with your enemies.

voted up though. just to keep on your right side.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on September 20, 2012:

@Levertis Steele - Luckily for me my skills at keeping my mouth shut are very strong - except when it comes to writing. I don't mind guys who prefer to relax than have a conversation - it is the ones that seem like they don't know how to have a conversation that get on my nerves. But the good thing is, in the profession I am in, people are usually drawn to one person in particular. So when you see a person that matches personalities, it is a good idea to get a haircut from them. I had a pretty big clientele. I hate calling them my clients because what it really comes down to is they are my friends. This list actually stemmed from a very bad day. It does hold some good advice but luckily for my need to have kept my job - I am just as good at grinning and bearing it ;)

Levertis Steele from Southern Clime on September 19, 2012:

I forgot to add:

Loved it! Funny, voted up, useful, and interesting.

Levertis Steele from Southern Clime on September 19, 2012:

Barbergirl28:

You drive a hard bargain, but not #7! The others are reasonable desires in my opinion.

The guy should explain how he wants his hair cut, but he is not there to entertain you. He is not required to have a conversation with you. Maybe he wants to think or just be quiet. If there is a commercial on television that embarrasses you, he is not a mind reader to know to create a distraction to make you feel comfortable. You can always turn it off or keep magazines. That is in your control not his. Last, you are the one who wants to make money, and you need to satisfy your customers. You have a lot of demands, and I must say that 9 of them are reasonable, but not #7. If you decide to voice these commands, get ready to close shop if you say them the way you have written them. On some jobs, you must take the bitter with the sweet.

When I was young, I worked at a nursing home for a while. Old people are like babies, and you have to love them. I could not issue commands.

I declare I understand your points, but unless you find a way to tell these men without insulting them, you have to deal with the odors and sweat. If you make appointments, give the funky ones morning slots. Maybe they will be fresher.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on September 07, 2012:

@Cogerson - I was one of the lucky ones. I had a lot of request clients. I think they were all about my sarcasm! :) Oh yeah - and I gave a killer haircut! ;) But because of that, I rarely had to deal with people I didn't really know. Don't get me wrong, I got the occasional walk-in but most days I was with my request clients all day long. That meant I had more good days than bad days. There are always a few though that you just don't have a choice with. The day I wrote this was one of those day! :) Glad you enjoyed this and I hope more people get a chance to see these tips to avoid a bad haircut! :)

UltimateMovieRankings from Virginia on September 06, 2012:

I really enjoyed reading your ten tips. Knowing your past career I am sure that you had lots of customers that did not follow these simple courteous rules. I always thought taking a shower before a haircut was a good idea....now I know it is a great idea. I will be thinking about this hub and the rules the next time I get a haircut. Voted up and useful.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on September 04, 2012:

@writeronline - Sometimes the hardest thing to do is just grin ... you can't help who you have to deal with but in this kind of job you have to be the better of the two people. However, no one ever said we couldn't share tips to improve the experience! :)

writeronline on August 28, 2012:

Good fun read. My brother in law was a barber for many years. I can just about hear him now, saying all the things you're saying. Drove him nuts - he's since worked as a mailman for many years; I guess you don't have to be so polite when it's real dogs crapping on your day..

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on August 28, 2012:

@Fiddleman - That brings back memories... not fond ones... but memories nonetheless. One time - and I am so happy it wasn't me doing the haircut, and guy and his wife came in. Apparently they work on a farm. Anyway, to make a long story short, one of them had something nasty stuck to the bottom of their shoe. It was bad when they were getting their haircut but the second they left, the stink just stayed in the air. Come to find out, the bottom of their shoe rubbed it in every where they stepped.... on the mat, inbedded in the hair on the ground, stuck in the broom now... yuck. Since I was pregnant at the time, I had to leave the shop and go outside for fresh air - it actually made me vomit. It was the grossest thing I ever had to deal with. Luckily - we weren't busy and the smell of lysol did a good job of covering it. But the station they were in stunk for almost an hour afterwards! Yucky!

Fiddleman on August 27, 2012:

Home run! My son as you may already know from reading my hubs is also a barber. He is an excellent barber and all you have written is the way it should be especially about taking a bath. He had a customer once that stunk to high heaven and when he exited the barbershop, he threw away the cloth and sterilized his tools.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on August 17, 2012:

@J.S.Matthew - It is all in the name of beauty... that's my job! :)

JS Matthew from Massachusetts, USA on August 16, 2012:

Well, we appreciate you sharing your experiences with customers so that we don't make the same mistakes!

JSMatthew~

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on August 16, 2012:

@J.S.Matthew - Thank you so much for stopping by and including this in your online newspaper. I have to say - almost always - people that follow these guidelines will not only get a good haircut, but will more than likely enjoy their experience more as well. The bad side of this... I think I have experienced every one of these situations with a client at some point in time.

JS Matthew from Massachusetts, USA on August 15, 2012:

I somehow "found" this one in the archives. What a funny and great read! I love your sense of humor mixed with honesty. I have always followed these guidelines and I can say that I have never had a bad haircut experience (at least not by a licensed professional!) @josh3418 - I am really glad that you enjoyed this. It is probably one of my best hubs and even though it may have had cranky tendencies... it worked well. For if I saved one person from avoiding a shower or brushing their teeth before seeing their hairstylist, my work is done! :)

Joshua Zerbini from Pennsylvania on August 05, 2012:

Stacy,

This was stinking hilarious! I enjoyed it thoroughly! LOL SO FUNNY!

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on June 12, 2012:

@George - There is one thing certain when it comes to finding a good stylist.... if you are particular than stick with the same one. I am a talker. I like to talk because I think that it makes the whole experience fun. Now, there is a time for talking and a time for not (like when you are doing the shampooing) That is the relaxation part of the service. But, my clients know this of me already and that is what keeps them coming back. Now, some people are just awkward socially. That is what I am referring to. Not the person who doesn't want to talk because they really need the down time. There is a difference and the person should know the difference or they are in the wrong field. I hope that you haven't gotten the wrong impression when you go in to get your haircut. If you are there to relax, the person cutting your hair should be able to know the difference. I will admit though - talking to your next client or to your coworker when you should have your attention on the person you are working for is nothing more than rude! Thanks for stopping by and I hope all of your haircuts are good ones! :)

George on June 06, 2012:

Try to be socible? Well let us see, many women get their hair done, manicures and pedicures. Many men "do" their own nails. What does that leave a man? That's right, you guessed it,a haircut. If your customer is giving you one word answers a polite hint that he does not want to engage in conversation. He is hinting and hoping you'll understand. He just wants to relax and enjoy a peaceful haircut. It can be very soothing. A kind of therapy. Does it not bother you while you're getting a massage and the massage therapist just wants to keep talking? That's the only thing worse is when a stylist or barber is holding conversation with another stylist or worse yet a customer who is next in line for a haircut. What, they can't wait until the customer gets in the chair? Please. I cannot tell you how to get customers in the door. Well I could but that is another conversation. If you want it to keep your customers and increase your tips, allow your customers to just enjoy a quiet, peaseful, soothing haircut if they wish not to talk. I enjoy the calming sound of the scissors and your fingers working my hair. I really agree about the shower and shampoo. Let's not forget to brush your teeth!

@mythicalstorm - You know I would in a heart beat... and you have always been a good client. You sit real still and hardly ever complain when I pull your hair! :)

I wish you could come give me a haircut! I would leave you a good tip and talk nicely and be a really good client :-) Still even after rereading this I must admit you give some good advice!

Anjili from planet earth, a humanoid on May 11, 2012:

@Myth - This hub was written under the extreme BS mode... oh yeah... and irritation. I remember I had a bad day at work. This was a great way to release pent up anger... and I find my sarcasm can sometimes be thought of as humor! LOL - glad you enjoyed this one! :)

mythicalstorm273 on April 28, 2012:

Your barber stories and advice are always entertaining. Of course you are entertaining no matter what the case is! I remember I had read this one a long time ago, but revisiting these are fun!

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on February 08, 2012:

@Jeannette - First off, I have to say I think it is wonderful what you are doing. These patient's need this service just as much as anybody else and making them feel good about themselves is a great way to help them get better. As for your coworkers, I would gently tell them that per your job description you are unable to cut there hair (even though you are aware of them only kidding), and you would appreciate if they stop requesting your services.

Unfortunatley, if the easy way doesn't work you are going to have to get a little more direct. Tell them that what you do is just as important as their jobs and treating you like this is disrespectful and no longer will be tolerated. It is sad to think these people might be asking these questions because they don't think being a barber is a respectable job. But be proud of what you do and you can even tell them that. Because what you do is important. I hope this helps you.

Jeannette on February 05, 2012:

I work as a barber in a hosipital. To cut only patient's hair but the workers like cna and housekeepers always ask me for hair cuts. And they are just kidding. But i do not like them asking me all the time.I dont think its funny.I feel good about what i do.How can i stop there stupid questions?

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on January 01, 2012:

@kellymom1970 - Wow it looks like you had a rocking flattop part to bring in the new year. The 00000 is by far my favorite blade when doing military haircuts. It just doesn't seem to get short enough otherwise. Happy New Year - you can rock it! :)

kellymom1970 on December 31, 2011:

barbergirl, The flattops rock the party my mom,Kara my neighbor, myself and one or my clients turned many heads at the party, even with a flattop I felt left out because I have hair on the sides and back. Now they got me thinking 2012 maybe military flattop time for me also looks like you are right about the 00000 blade it got these women lots of attention. I'm next now. thanks

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 31, 2011:

@kellymom1970 - Awesome job like usual! And what a giant step to go from shoulder length to skin. Keep on pushing it! :) Hope you guys have a great New Year and a wonderful 2012! See you next year! :)

kellymom1970 on December 31, 2011:

barbergirl, Happy New year, I buzz the neighbor lady today in my kitchen for the part tonight. That's her picture very cool flattop! Shoulder length to military flattop at 47 very hot! what do you think.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 26, 2011:

@Susan - Our family had a good Christmas. I am not going to lie - I am glad it is over and done with for this year. Too much stress! Glad to hear you guys had a great one too! Enjoy the new haircut! :)

susan54 on December 26, 2011:

Barbergirl, I really hope your family had a great christmas, we did, my hubby shaved me with his new razor full bald horseshoe now. I love it! great work out haircut. see you later.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 22, 2011:

@Kellymom1970 - I am so glad she absolutley loves it... and possibly got a date out of it. She must sure be rocking it! I bet she is going to get all sorts of reactions at Christmas as well! Awesome!

kellymom1970 on December 22, 2011:

Barbergirl, MOM loves the new cut! She has never had her hair this short before. She is bald everywhere now but still has a flattop. I cut it at my shop the old men in there were going cazy over it. I think she got a date out of it.lol She looks so cool! Thanks, I think this summer I taking her to a full horseshoe flattop.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 20, 2011:

No problem... let me know what she thinks of hte 00000 - that is by far my favorite blade when doing short haircuts... well beside the straight razor that is! But it is a starting point! :)

kellymom1970 on December 20, 2011:

barbergirl, thanks I think tomorrow when she comes over I am using a 00000 on her side, back and top. She will have little gray hair left for christmas, but she likes it even more than the longer flattop. The other women at bingo just love the landing strip she said.lol Thanks for the advise,

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 20, 2011:

@Kellymom - Barber to Barber - I would probably take it down to a 000 or do you have a 00000. That way she isn't having you cut it down every 2 to 3 days. I would see how she likes it with the shorter version though before you straight razor it, but that would be my next step! :)

kellymom1970 on December 20, 2011:

Barbergirl, I think my mom is Susans twin, (By the way Susan very cool for getting a horseshoe)as a barber love cutting them. I have only cut 1 woman with a horseshoe, and I had one when I was around 25 or so for a summer. So, back to mom she called me today, it's only been 2-3 days and said the top is getting to long and need to be cut again, lol. Barber to barber should I use a 0 again, 000,or just straight razor it. Maybe a full on horseshoe like Susan said she getting. thanks again.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 19, 2011:

@Susan - Wow - a new razor... I bet he is going to love it. Go get that horseshoe and rock it. You guys have a great holiday!

susan54 on December 19, 2011:

barbergirl, After all this working out and shopping and reading about kellys mom. I'm going on fri before my office party to bring back my horseshoe flattop. My husband still has his, I got him a new electric razor for Christmas, they say it cuts so close you don't see hair for three day. When he opens I going to let him try it out on my horseshoe flattop first and then I'm shaving him. Then we will be off to the family rounds house to house. I have really come to like the horseshoe flattop more and more my kids even like it on me.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 18, 2011:

@Kellymom1970 - That is just too awesome. I can tell just by your comment that she has found a whole new bout of self-confidence. Who knows - maybe this is what she has been looking for. I bet she is going to be the hit of the Christmas part! :)

kellymom1970 on December 18, 2011:

barbergirl28, I think all of these people liking my moms flattop is going to her head,LOL She came over today and ask my to give her a landing strip! Wow Well I gave her what she wanted I do like it on her 71 all gray with a flattop landing strip. I did it with a 0 blade did want to go to crazy on her. I sure she will want it shorter next time who know maybe she will be bald by summer.Lol

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on December 13, 2011:

kellymom1970 on December 13, 2011:

barbergirl28, I had to take my mom for a check up, and about 20 female nurses and doctors just love my mom and my flattops. We were the talk of the place. I ended up give out 7 or so cards 3 said they wanted a flattop and 1 came in and got one last saturday she is about 30 with really dark hair, she look so cute. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

@Susan - you are beautiful inside and out. And truly, I believe you have what it takes to pull off whatever you would like. It looks gorgeous!!! And you are very right - it is only hair. Eventually it will grow back! Kudos to you! Oh yeah - and I think either suits you so go which ever one you are grooving at the time!

kellymom1970 on November 12, 2011:

Barbergirl28, I just posted my first hub! come see thanks

susan54 on November 12, 2011:

Barbergirl28, I did it! After all it is only hair right. What do yoy think, Keep it or buzz it into a horseshoe flattop haircut.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 11, 2011:

@Susan - You seem to be able to pull off anything so I can't honestly say no. However, there are 2 different kinds of hair dye that you can go for... the permanent which will stay until it grows out. That won't be too bad for you because you cut your hair so often and so short. However, be warned if you don't plan on keeping the color it will have to grow out and will at one point reach that awkward phase where your normal color is on the bottom and you have red tips. But, I guess it depends on how red you plan on going. My hair has a red tint to it, but it isn't Santa color red. If you want to go a bright red (think Santa suit) I would do a temporary or demi-permanent hair color. Demi would wash out and fad as the hair grows and is washed.

If you do it I would love to see it!

susan54 on November 11, 2011:

barbergirl28, I thinking about coloring my flattop bright red for the holiday, yes or no. Let me know what you think. Thanks for reading my hub!

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 09, 2011:

@Kellymom - I have to say - you look absolutely stunning with a flat top. As a barber, I never really got much of an opportunity to do women's hair in the actual shop. It was actually frown upon because it was set up to be a place for men. The view was women have there place - the salon and men don't want to go get there hair cut and breath in all the fumes from perms and stuff. But, we did allow women if they insisted, but they didn't get any different treatment from the men. Needless to say, we didn't see them too often. I have had a few, but only one was actually a buzz cut. Those are definitely my favorite kinds to do. I think people underestimate the skill it takes for a good buzz cut.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the Barbering business!

kellymom1970 on November 09, 2011:

Barbergril28,VOTE UP, from a fellow barber. I just love giving womens military haircuts. If you come into my shop and you are a women your leaving buzzed.I have been a barber for over 20 years,I got my first flattop in barber school and have had one on and off ever since,as of now I wear a flattop for the past 3 years. My mom she 70 I have been giving her a flattop for over 11 years as of her birth a week ago, she now wears it a white 0 side and back 1/2" on the top,she just started that this past summer. I say good for her.

I love to see all of these flattop women around the internet.

I'm looking to read more from you

see you later

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 08, 2011:

@Susan - you got the motivation to get everybody going. I don't know if you will convince me. You know what they say... people who do the job often don't take care of it on themselves. I think the last time my hair has been cut was last December. Purely because I dont' have the patience and since we moved - I don't know anybody that I trust with it. That being said - a flat top is a very high maintenace cut and I don't know if I want to get my haircut that frequently. I hate getting my hair done. I know - sounds weird coming from someone who encourages everybody else to do the opposite! :) But, I care more about your hair than my own... maybe that is what makes me so good at my job! :)

susan54 on November 08, 2011:

Barbergirl28,I could see you in one after the wedding,Plus you are going to have one hot body mama!

susan54 on November 08, 2011:

Barbergirl28,Yes I am! I have been working on my daughters for a while now one said after 40 she will give it a try,and the other said at 35 she has a year and a half to go.Can't wait for that. I just love it so much on women, more should try it,One women at a time starts a trend. Thanks

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 08, 2011:

@Susan - The flat top conveys strength, courage and confidence. I think she is a beautiful person inside and out and getting a flat top would suit her well! :) Definitely has a great face shape for it. If I am thinking correctly - you are on a mission to get ever woman out there a flat top! Way to go! Keep up the good work! :)

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 08, 2011:

@Mary - It sure does sound like we have a bit in common. I am going to have to check out your review on The Surly Barber. I love the barbering industry. It is just so much fun. And feel free to link anything you would like. I appreiciate it!

Mary Hyatt from Florida on November 08, 2011:

Linda1971 on November 07, 2011:

barbergril28, I thank you so much for the hair advise. I love the flattop cut so much. I am going thursday for a trim up. It's been round 11 day this will be my 3rd cut,It turned my love life around 300%. So thank you girls so much. I thinks for christmas I'm going to get a short buzzed flattop. My mother in law said she want the same flattop as mine. I not telling how short we are going I hope she like Susans flattop that what I'm thinking.Lol I love you guys you changed my life.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 07, 2011:

@Linda - Granny with a flat top - that means they are looking at you in awe! Jealous because they don't have the confidence to pull it off! Now shaved eyebrows - I still stand by the getting weird looks thing. I once burned mine off accidently. I got lots of weird looks - but maybe that was because I didn't draw them back on! LOL

susan54 on November 07, 2011:

barbergirl28,I think your right I will keep the eyebrows and wax them thinner. Thanks for the advise. As for the people probably look at me fuuny, that because I a granny with a military flattop.Lol

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 06, 2011:

@Susan - Glad you are still loving your flat top. And I can agree - you better get the sunscreen out and lather it on the top of your head. I have seen way too many guys come in with burnt scalps. That does not make for a very fun haircutting experience.

As for the eyebrows, I am not for the shaved off and drawn on look. I like regular eyebrows. However, you could see about getting them waxed a little thinner. This will help with 2 things. If you shave them off completely and you don't feel like doing your makeup, no one is going to look at you funny for not having eyebrows. And 2, you can still draw them on somewhat just to darken them. I can honestly say age has nothing to do with my opinion of the eyebrows - I just don't really care for the drawn on look. Hope that helps! :)

susan54 on November 06, 2011:

Barbergirl28, Well I can say my barber is still happy to cut my hair, back 2010 in June, Jill wanted to take my flattop very short well, horseshoe flattop short. That was a whole new experience.I thought, I look good out and about with a sundress on and big earrings, I did have to wear suntan lotion on the bald part of my head, that Texas sun will burn you and I don't like to cover my hair up.Well, Jill wet shaved my flattop again yesterday not a full horseshoe but full shave sides and back with bald landing strip. I think it looks even better now that I'm down 10 lbs and more fit.

I know I'm old enough to be your mom,but what do you think about shave eyebrows I'm think of shaving them and drawing them on, I am turning 55 soon. Do you think it will look ok with my flattop haircut. Thanks

My husband said I look like I am 40 when I ride in my Jeep with the top off.

Linda, Love the new flattop on you. So cool.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on November 04, 2011:

@Linda - that is awesome. If I am thinking correctly you updated the picture. If so - it looks great! You definitely have the look to pull it off. Glad you went shorter and glad you absolutely love it!

Linda1971 on November 03, 2011:

barbergirl28, Well I did it! I told the barber to take my flat top shorter today. I love it so much! My mother-in-law wants her hair like mine now. Good thing we get along Lol

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on October 31, 2011:

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on October 31, 2011:

@LydieRVgirl - use that to your advantage and get crazy with it. Worse case scenario - it has to grow out! Glad you are enjoying the cuts. It seems there are so many out there that are loving the look!

LydieRVgirl from Pa in summer sebring fl winter on October 31, 2011:

Barbergirl28, She does owe me, LOL!!I think we are just some cazy old ladies. I'm so happy I did it becuase I love the look.I guess time will tell. Thanks, you are so cool!!

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on October 31, 2011:

@LydieRVgirl - that is pretty cool that you have a whole group of you with flat tops. As for the landing strip, the wonderful thing about cutting hair is each cut is a work of art and is up to interpretation. If you want to do a landing strip, typically it is to the skin, but you could probably do a #1 on top or have them click the guard out so it is like stubble and not fully bald. The look truly is in the hands of the barber and your choice. Who knows - by winter you might just have that landing strip. Your friend owes you one for getting you into the flat top so now its her turn to pay you back with a landing strip! :)

LydieRVgirl from Pa in summer sebring fl winter on October 30, 2011:

barbergirl28, Thanks. Yes my hubby wears a flat top also. He want me to get a landing strip on top, so we can match. There is 4 of us with flat tops. My friend Mary and her husband, and me and mine husband we spend the winter together.Mary got me wearing a flat top because I was the odd one out. I told my husband if Mary will get a landing strip this winter I will too. I don't want a bald one. Do you think I can do a landing with a # 1 guard. Thanks

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on October 30, 2011:

@LydieRVgirl - I think that is so neat that you and your husband go to the same barber. I truly think barbers are great at their trait. Glad you guys are enjoying the flat tops. Does your husband get a flat top as well?

Have fun in Florida and stay warm! :)

LydieRVgirl from Pa in summer sebring fl winter on October 29, 2011:

barbergirl28, I just got my flat top trimmed up. The barber did such a great job.I told him to take it shorter on the sides and back #1, top still 1/2". The same barber did mine and my husbands. Leaving for the winter,Florida here we come. My husband jokes,he said a family that shaves together, stays together. We did tip the barber, very well.

Stacy Harris (author) from Hemet, Ca on October 28, 2011:

@Susan - probably not. We moved about 10 months ago and I don't know too many females out here, much less those that aren't completely attached to their long hair, but if I find one... I will let you know!

<![CDATA[Hair Salon Names - Funny, Catchy, and Hairbrained Ideas]]>https://bellatory.com/hair/Harebrained-Names-for-Beauty-Salonshttps://bellatory.com/hair/Harebrained-Names-for-Beauty-SalonsMon, 21 Jul 2008 16:38:19 GMTNaming your hair salon or nail salon is a big deal. Here are some suggestions for silly, clever, and quirky attention-getting names.

Rochelle Frank wrote humorous bits for her college newspaper many years ago. Her funny observations have continued in print and online.

Are You Serious? Silly Might Be Better

Fanciful and attention-getting names seem to be mandatory for hair and nail salons. Though this article highlights some of the quirky and humorous names that are being used, we know that naming your business is a very serious choice.

First, you want people to notice you so you have a chance to convince them that you provide great service. Second, you want to convey something personal or unique about your business so your name will be memorable and they will remember to recommend you.

... Samson's hair.

Public Domain

Salon names often seem to use crazy spelling, alliteration, questionable rhymes, puns, and pure silliness with reckless abandon.

Ken's Kuts & Kolors wins the prize for using the most K's in one business. Salons also offer Klassy Kuts, or Kuts 'n' Kurls.

Spelling violations also plague Hair Stranz and Hanz On Nail Designs, both of which are in Corona, CA—or might that be Korona, KA? Salon sign-makers have taken over the underused letters in our alphabet (like K and Z) and given them something to do.

Rhyming names are also popular for hair establishments. A few examples: Hair Affair, The Hair Lair, Great Lines Hair Designs, Nail Detail, Gail's Nails, and Dale's Nails.

For sheer puns, you can get Shear Design, Shear Heaven, Shear Magic, Shear Creations, Shear Delight, Shears to You, Shear Brilliance, Shear Elegance, Blood Sweat & Shears, as well as Shear Madness, Shear Beauty, Shear Talent or even Shearly Beloved. I, personally, would tend to stay out of the establishments advertising blood and sweat.

Prime Cuts, Upper Cuts, Just Cut Loose, The Final Cut, and A Cut Above also attract attention with that hint of an extreme makeover.

Hair Apparent, Hair and Beyond, Hair Raisers, Hair to Please You, and Hair to Stay are apparently here to stay.

The Best Little Hairhouse in (whatever state) might make you do a double-take. There's even a Hairhouse Warehouse for beauty supplies.

Hair Today, Bangs for the Memories, Mane Event, All Tressed Up, Hair to Please, The Bobshed, Scissorhands, Headmistresses, Cut and Caboodle all compete for silliness with Headquarters, Heads Up, Just Teasin', The Pomp Room, Clippety-Do-Dah, Comb as You Are and All Tressed Up.

Hair Salon Names

Up, Up, and Away

Hair salons want to raise the tone of the discourse, to go upscale, to reach new heights -- so a lot of salons seem to think that having a French name is classy, or even Klassy.

Among them are La Coiffure Salon, Le Nail Salon, Hair Nouveau, La Petite Salon, Le Mys Nails, Tre'ss Bien, and Hair Sebon.

The Harlow Jantee salon in Carmichael, California (now closed) had a "Manicureste.” If law firms wanted to add French class, they might name themselves Le Trois Avocats, or Le Ballet du Justice.

In one city you can choose between Hair Images, Hair Reflections, Hair Accents, Hair Attitudes, The Hair Shack, or Foxxy's, perhaps depending upon the social level you aspire to.

Some salons seem inspired by popular entertainment. For Your Nails Only sounds like a clandestine adventure. There's also The Last Tangle, but it's in Chico, not Paris.

More than one shop far from Hollywood has called itself Hollywood Nails. Then there's the more Shakespearean As You Like It Hair Studio.

A few hint at vanity on a higher plane like Angel Nails or Heaven On Earth. A New Creation Hair & Nails hints at rebirth, while Alpha & Omega Hairstyling Salon covers the subject completely.

You can get Heavenly Nails & Hair in a town that also has a shop for extreme nail emergencies, 911 Nails. Then there's Hair We Are. Where? In Cotati, California, and no doubt elsewhere.

First Lady Nails seems like they have limited their clientele as much as Holiday Nails has limited its seasons. Hair Cut 2000 may have changed their name by now, or else their calendar is a little slow.

Salon Names With Clues

Occasionally salon names reveal some detail from the real world. Acapella Salon, for example, probably does its styling without instrumental musical accompaniment. The Hands Up Nail Boutique may have had its name inspired by a recent robbery.

The Hairsmith salon sounds like they use hammers and anvils, which seems an unpleasant way to have your hair styled.

There is a College Green Hair Cutters. Do they cut only green hair? Do they also clip lawns?

Mille's Hair Mine opened in California's gold country after the gold rush ended and people began mining hair instead of precious metal.

Hair, Etc. seems to be a popular name, though it may leave too much to the imagination.

For those who like something a little more historical or traditional, there's Hairloom, or a number of Hairitage salons.

Hairborn, Hairport, American Hair Lines, and American Hair Force all sound aeronautic. Perhaps they are located at airline terminals.

Terminal Punning

Speaking of terminals, there's To Dye For, Dye Hard, Hair to Eternity and Permanent Solutions. My favorite along those lines is Curl Up and Dye. One such named establishment is located near a retirement community—and yes, community residents use the services.

Choose your salon name carefully. It will be with you for a long time and may determine if your business lives or dyes.

Plastic Figurines Utterly Serious About Salon Names

Questions & Answers

Question: What is the best name for a hair salon or parlor for both men and women?

Answer: The best name will always come from you. It might include your name, your location, your theme or something else that makes it special. For both men and women you might do something like "(Use Your name) Penny's for His and Her's", "Everyone's Hair", or just "His and Her Haircuts".

Question: What is the best name for an all-inclusive salon (nails, hair, brows, wax, barber)?

Answer: A very general, generic name might be something like "Head to Toe....", but the "best" name might be something that especially relates to you, your location, or something else that makes it personal and unique. You are building a brand, something that sets you apart from others who might be providing similar services. Once you select (or create) a name you will be identified with it for a long time so give it some more thought about what makes your shop special.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on November 23, 2017:

It's up to you, Jasmine. It should relate to YOU in some way-- your name, your speciality, your location, something else that is personally meaningful, or to what you customers want. Look through the suggestions and see if some of them inspire you. Good luck!

RTalloni on November 25, 2016:

Name competition among hair salons really is fun stuff. Re the mobile shop, I like Curb Appeal Styles. Then, for a practical name consider Your Place Hair or Meet Me Hair, but for a little more flair try, Hair We Go or Curbside Cuts.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on November 25, 2016:

I think the best ones are personal. They relate you, your location, your specialty. I can't really suggest what might be best for you, but read through the suggestions and see what rings your bell.

I think the name is important-- it makes people remember you. If you are mobile you might consider "------ on wheels" or maybe Hair to Go, "I'm Hair for You" ===== these are just off the top of my head ( as is my hair)..... get a couple of friends to help you brainstorm.

afira.noor@gmail.com on November 25, 2016:

i am going to open a mobile beauty salon please suggest me any good name

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on October 14, 2013:

Thanks, FlourishAnyway. Sometimes I think life would be much simpler without hair, but apparently it plays a big part of our economy.

FlourishAnyway from USA on October 14, 2013:

Oh these were too funny. I really love the one Curl Up and Dye. That is just terrible but also funny. Locally I go to one called A Cut Above, but I think I've gone to nearly ever "Shear" one on your list. Great topic for a hub.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on April 05, 2012:

stifler-- look through the ideas in the article and comments, then try doing some free association with some of the words. The best ideas for your salon come directly from you. Good luck.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on March 01, 2012:

Sounds like another winner.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on February 28, 2012:

Sounds very much to the point. No nonsense.

Roxie on February 28, 2012:

To the woman who was opening a salon with her sister- we have a salon in town called two women doing hair. Could be two sisters doing hair.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on November 28, 2011:

Nicola and Lori-- it is hard to find a name that is unique and reflects your own personality. Sometimes it takes awhile, but I think you will know when just the right idea hits you. Good luck in your new businesses.

Lori on November 28, 2011:

Have had a barber shop for seven years that's under the old owners name. Shop was established in 1965. Time for a face lift and name change. So many other shops in the area. Have an older client base. Need to attract a younger base. Husband came up with a clever name with my initial but not sure if it will offend anyone. "L" of a Cut Barber Shop. Want something catchy and clever. Also a name to be proud of. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on November 15, 2011:

Maybe, "We Sisters" or "Sisters with Scissors"--- It will eventually have to come from the both of you. something you can agree on.

I actually think that using the idea of sisters in your name would be great-- because people will get to know you and remember the sister part.

I'm in no way an expert a salon naming-- but you might find some ideas here. Good luck.

Jackie on November 15, 2011:

I am looking for a name for our new hairdressers, were sisters so would like to incorporate this into the name - any ideas ?

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on August 26, 2011:

Maybe you could ask some of the people of the community. One I heard of was Haarmonie (a combination of Haar, German for ‘hair’ and the German word for harmony)

littlebarbe on August 26, 2011:

Hi I'm opening a salon and a German Community,i wanted used word's like, hair, love, peace, and german.Any ideas.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on August 14, 2011:

That's actually pretty good. It's hard enough to attention for your business when you are on street level. That sign might get people to stop and think about climbing a flight of stairs.

Thanks for commenting.

Buster Bucks from Sonoma County, California on August 14, 2011:

I spotted my favorite name while in San Francisco about 15 years ago.

The hair salon was located on the second floor, and they had a sign pointing upward with their business name on it:

"We're Up Hair"

:-)

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on July 19, 2011:

Thanks for commenting, Amanda and Eaglekiwi. Naming your business is an important decision. You might get an ideas by looking up the names of similar businesses (in places not near you) and thinking about why one appeals to you and another one doesn't seem to work.

Your location might have an influence-- or you might want to create a sense of another location. For instance, if you are not near an ocean, you cold make your spa seem like a mini-vacation at on a tropical isle or a Mediterranean resort (like the Greek theme that was suggested).

The name might also affect your décor. Hope you come up with some good ideas.

Eaglekiwi from -Oceania on July 16, 2011:

How about Spa Gaia...she was a Greek Goddess (Mother Earth)

Rolls off the tongue nicely. Also, a Greek inspired theme would work.

Amanda F on July 15, 2011:

Hello!

Ok so I am looking for a creative/ funny name for my Day Spa and am at a complete loss, everyone I pick has already been used. If you have any ideas that would be great! I dont do hair which is why none of the above really work for me :(

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on May 29, 2011:

I wonder if 'Scissorhands' draws people in. I might not want to try that, but I guess the point is 'mainly' to attract attention.

Thor on May 28, 2011:

We have 2-3 depending on how you look at it of these names where I live. Scissorhands Salon, Mane Event/Main Event. I think the last 2 are owned by the same people just spelled differently.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on March 20, 2011:

Naming your business is a very personal thing and I think it can make a difference. Long names can be hard to remember-- and sometimes hard to put on a sign.

Kristy H:) on March 16, 2011:

I have a salon in north georgia which is right outside of Chattanooga,Tn and there are some great names I have came across. My salon name is Generations Hair Studio b/c my mom and I own the salon. We have salon names like...DNA Hair Structure,Bella Mi Salon,Curl up & Dye.lol,The Lemon Drop,The Flirt, The famous..HairBenders,I do like HairFLingers,I like the Hair Shack as well. I hope this helps...but really watch long salon names!

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on February 25, 2011:

Now, that would be a strange name for a salon-- and might be misunderstood.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on February 08, 2011:

I assume you are not serving actual cocktails-- so I think the last two might be misleading. Maybe something with "mixers", "happy hour", "lounge"? Hope you find what that works for you.

get nailed on February 06, 2011:

I hope to be opening a nail and waxing salon in the next few months and am having a hard time coming up with a name. It will be a bar themed salon. Some ideas are:

All Lacquered Up

Lacquered Up

Nails on the Rocks

Martinis and Manicures

Cocktails for Nails

I don't want to name it The Nail Bar as there are too many of those already. I was hoping to come up with something that tied the cocktail theme into the name. I would love to hear more suggestions!!! Thank you.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on October 23, 2010:

How about Kricket Klipz? Thanks for the comment. I didn't realize there were specialty shops for kids.

Kricket on October 23, 2010:

What about the kids salons? Noticed that they too have just as many corner names? Here we have Kidz LIdz, Candy Hair, Snippetty, Locks of Fun, Lollilocks, Cool Cuts for Kids, Hollywood Kids (and it's in Australia!) and more I am sure I haven't discovered yet. Some of these are trendy and should do well, but some kids salon names are just plain sad. Can we come up with some strong trendy kids salon names to show the world here??? May prevent more of these 'fluffy' named salons from opening!

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on July 12, 2010:

I think the most important thing is that you are happy and comfortable with it. Good luck in your new business.

nteseng on July 12, 2010:

I love your article. it is beautiful....I am opening a hair & beauty salon in a month and not sure what to name it. I loved celestial hair salon or B'yond Celestial hair salon...any ideas?

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on June 21, 2010:

I think that's adorable.-- maybe just not the right place. It would probably do fine in Florida or California.

Terre on June 21, 2010:

I'm a hairstylist who was out of the cosmo loop for quite awhile and now going back into the profession again. Almost 25 years ago I owned my own salon (twice) in Kansas. I moved there from Florida...(big mistake!!) anyway, I called my salons the "Comb-a-cabana" club and had it decked out like the Copacabana in Bogart's movie. I had tropical plants everywhere, an old piano in the corner, wore tropical attire and served non-alcoholic coctails. It turned out horrible! Those people didn't get it at all and I kept getting calls from old farmers wanting to know if my salon was a new beer joint! The old women in town - well, you can probably guess. They were so stuck in the past!! But I always loved calling my salons the "Comb-a-cabana"!!! If I open up another salon I'm sticking with it!!!!

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on March 18, 2010:

That one actually sounds like a great salon name. Creative and sensible... And something everyone wants. Good luck!

Wezzie k on March 18, 2010:

Intend to open my own with First Impression as a name. Is that one cool.

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on February 22, 2010:

It is an early one -- and has (BY FAR) the most total views of any of my hubs. In fact out of my 109 hubs-- this one has about 1/3 of my total hub views.

With several thousands of visits, I can only surmise that I accidentally tossed in some good SEO keywords. My theory is that all hair stylists long to own their own salon. When they have downtime, they get on the computer and search for names.

Thanks for your comment.

Alfreta Sailor from Southern California on February 21, 2010:

This is one of the cutest hubs I've seen. I'm going to bookmark it to use for conversation in some of my "old girl pajama parties." I'm looking forward to reading more of your hubs soon.

Susan Reid from Where Left is Right, CA on April 06, 2009:

Getting one's hair coiffed should not be a hair-raising experience. I personally would worry about the capabilities of the stylists (not to mention the mental acuity of the salon owner) in many of these establishments. Call me a snob, but if it's got alliteration using "k's" I'm keeping my kurls out of their klutches for sure!

A similar phenom seems to be occurring with spas these days. Spas are proliferating in my town (which means they must be proliferating elsewhere) like Starbucks in the 1990s. Seems there's on on every korner. Oops -- spas don't go for that.

Fun hub, Rochelle.

For the record, I used to get my hair done at Laura duPriest (the salon owner's name), then Encore Hair Designs, then Paula V's (again, owner's name) until Paula moved over to Bloom Salon...

My nail salon has changed names so long I no longer change the entry in my cell phone:-). MM

I would be afraid of "Running with Scissors"-- we were always told not to. My haircutter uses a razor, but doesn't run.

I agree about the views-- but seems very weird that it has almost 3000-- and the next highest has 600-- then 500-- and steep decline from there. As you say, who looks at numbers?

Joanna McKenna from Central Oklahoma on January 27, 2009:

Just had to throw these in:

Hair Maintenance (except in their TV ad, the H is obliterated with some sort of graphic, so all you see is "Air Maintenance". Meaning when the stylists that come on next talk about the services offered, you aren't sure if. it's a hair salon or a heating/AC company)

Hair Razors

Eclipz Studio

Jagged Edge

Mane Thing Salon & Spa

Not So Plain Jane's

The Snippery

Running With Scissors (?????????)

Tips 2 Toes

Twirl-A-Kurl

And no pun intended, one that cuts right to the chase: You're SO Vain (caps theirs, not mine)

As for why people keep finding this hub - who cares? A page view is a page view, whether you consider it one of your best or not. ;)

Thanks, Christoph.

This one has been posted for quite awhile-- and though I don't think it is my best , it has been ( far and away ) the most viewed each day -- must be linked somewhere.

It's still a mystery to me why it continues to get 30 to 50 views a day, while others are lucky to get one.

Christoph Reilly from St. Louis on January 25, 2009:

Very funny! I don't think I have any funny name salons in my town. I feel left out. I tried to come up with some, but it seems as though they are all actually taken. How about wig shops? "Flip your Wig," or "You Grow Em, We Sew Em!" Nah.

Anyway, great hub. Sorry I missed it first time around. I've got lots of catching up to do!

Lori on January 18, 2009:

I have quite a few things for sale before my big move. One thing that I have for sale is a Eugene LTD Perming Machine and matching Dryer from the 1900's, would anyone know what this would be valued at or anyone have any idea's on what I should sell it for??? This isn't something I can keep as for I will not have the room for it. (I hope no one will buy it thinking there going to use the thing)! Ha Ha Ha I know things make come backs, but God I hope our jobs get easier not harder.

Thanks Lori

Great hub! "A cut above" is depressingly common here, and I've come across a hairdresser's called "Hair today..."

ReuVera from USA on January 11, 2009:

Haha, nice! My sister-in-law used to have a beauty shop called "Hair and Company". Also there's in town "Cool Noggings", "Mere Image".

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on January 04, 2009:

Good luck in your business!

Lori on January 04, 2009:

Okay, I came up with a name that is shorter and catchy as well. I orignally wanted something to link up with Beach Theme like " Waves in the hair and waves at the beach" However... I wanted something with the word corner in it too because I live on a corner. So sometimes simple is best I've decided on

Cutting Corners and placing this with a pair of sissors opened up to make it look like 4 corners!

I can still have the Salon in a coastal theme. People will see it soon enough. However when I make my price list for the people I will make the words come alive.

Thanks for the help

Lori on December 28, 2008:

Thanks for replying!

I do wish to add I wish to have incorporated into the name somewhere, "Corner"

Like Corner Shades & Waves However I think it sounds like I'm selling sunglasses on a corner in the shade. Ha Ha Ha. This is why I am asking for Help.

Corner Cuts, Shades & Waves ???? Too long

Thanks for commenting-- I appreciate every visit. And I love what I have read of yours.

KRC from Central Texas on October 20, 2008:

Great Hub! We have some of those too, but we also have "Just Cuttin'", "Cuttin' Up", "The Cutting Edge", "The Wild Hair", "The Cuttery", "Hair Masters", and "Hair We Are".

gwendymom from Oklahoma on October 09, 2008:

Great Hub, again! I loved the Bushwackers one. I wonder how many customers they actually have. I don't think I could walk in there lokking for a haircut, I might if I needed a bikini waxing.

Benson Yeung from Hong Kong on September 26, 2008:

Rochelle Frank (author) from California Gold Country on September 15, 2008:

Maybe that's true in some places, Research Analyst--(I see squirrels on every corner-- but I'm not in a city). Might be because it is often a woman who opens this kind of business-- and for starting a small business it is one that doesn't need a lot of start-up capital, compared to others.

spryte from Arizona, USA on September 09, 2008:

LOL! Great hub and yes it does work for the HubMob!

Lexica from Germany on July 22, 2008:

Hi Rochelle, I've long suspected that half the world's creative potential goes into naming hair salons and you've just confirmed the fact for me! Please note that this is an international phenonemon - the names in Europe are equally "hair-raising."

That's nothing. I should write a hub on naming horses: Sweetheart on Parade, Thunder's Spotted Bull, Spatter Butt, Hih Lite's Hallelujah Cody, Dash for Cash, etc.
