Hottest Fashion Trends for Summer

With an eye on fashion, art, music and movies, Jaynie keeps her finger on the pulse of pop culture. Why? Because it's fun.

How to Look Fab This Summer

Designers around the world struggle each season to find innovative trends that might truly change the fashion landscape. They look all over to rediscover dormant classics with the intention of making them feel new again. Consumers who care about fashion pour over fashion magazines, keep their eyes on Fashion Week designers, and watch the Grammys, Oscars and Tony Awards more to see what the stars are wearing than who wins what award.

If you're one of these fashion aficionados, you may already know what this article is about to reveal. If not, hopefully you'll enjoy the following fashion tips for looking your best this summer.

Crochet

No. You didn't read that wrong. I did say, "Crochet." In my humble (or not so humble) opinion, I thought I'd start with the weaker trend and work my way up. I honestly thought crocheting went out with the 70s. With the exception of baby blankets, winter scarves, mittens and hats, I really didn't know crocheting was still a thing. Unless you're into pot holders. I almost forgot pot holders.

But apparently I'm not as hip as I thought, because somehow I missed that crocheted fashions are making a comeback. Yes, now you too, can bear an uncanny resemblance to your grandmother's throw pillow collection. I have seen a few cute crocheted tops and swimsuit cover ups, so it's not all bad.

The risky thing about crocheted clothing, is that it takes a particular body type to pull this look off. Crocheted tops and bottoms are obviously far bulkier than linens, cottons, and other softer fabrics. If you are a curvier gal or otherwise carrying a few extra pounds, you might wish to avoid this trend as it will tend to add a few pounds to your appearance. But hey, if you can rock a few extra pounds and love the look, by all means, go for it!

Apron Skirts

Okay, I'll admit, I had a really hard time deciding which trend was worse; Apron Skirting or Crocheted clothing. I went with crochet simply because of the heavy appearance, but let's be serious here. The Apron Skirt looks like a "fashion" one wears when they're trying to cover up a hole in their pants or a stain on their butt. I remember having an embarrassing stain on my pants in middle school. I wrapped a warmup jacket around my waist to cover it up. Yeah. Apron Skirting is kind of like that.

The other question I have about apron skirting in summer is, it's summer! It's already hot. Do we really need to layer on clothes? What is fashionable about giving the appearance of wearing everything in your closet at one time?

Now if you wear the apron skirt as a sarong type swimsuit cover-up, that might be cute and very summery. Again, this is just one woman's opinion. But this is also the woman who missed the memo explaining why "sagging" was a good idea. Pull your damn pants up! But I digress...

Maxi Dresses

Yeah, now we're getting somewhere. The only thing wrong with the maxi dress is that at 5 foot 1, I can't wear them without alterations. Pity. 'Cause they're really, really cute, not to mention versatile. The maxi dress is perfect for a day at the beach or other casual outing and can also be accessorized to make the ideal evening gown. I love, love, love this look. On taller girls. They have all the fun!

Fringe

I wasn't too sure about this at first, but I've been shopping around, and I swear, fringe is everywhere! And honestly, I'm starting to think you can't go wrong with fringe. Whether you're a cowgirl, a hippie or a girlie girl, this style will suit you well. It can be soft and feminine or edgy and brash. I've even seen some fringe that works well on *gasp* crochet!

Fringe works on everything from dresses, to shirts, boots, skirts, purses, earrings and vests, so it's really versatile.

White

Looking for a crisp, timeless look? One that says, "I'm cool and clean?" Even when you're sweating buckets and feeling less than fresh? Wearing white might be the answer. Personally, I could never pull off white. But that may be because I'm not in Hollywood. Ever notice how the hottest ladies in Hollywood can walk around those blistering California sidewalks without pit stains and yellowing around their collars? I really need to know what kind of deodorant they're wearing because it looks like it's working great!

Point is, if you're looking to be chic, light and airy, wearing white is the way to go. Whether pulling off a sleek pencil skirt, flowy dress, or feminine blouse, you can't go wrong with white. Unless you're going out for spaghetti dinner. Then maybe you can go wrong. I'd order pasta with Alfredo sauce instead. If you'd like a splash of color, consider a hot pair of red shoes, colorful fabric belt, cool lacquered necklace or a colorful handbag.

Yellow

Yellow is one of the hottest trends this summer. Maybe that's because you can still wear that cute white dress after it's been perspired in. Okay - that's gross. I'm kidding, of course. I'm not talking about pale yellow (though that works too). I'm talking about bold, brash, and vibrant yellow. The kind that will have your friends calling you "Miss Mary Sunshine!" A lot of people think they can't wear yellow, but honestly, I think most people can.

Blondes look good in yellow because blondes often seem to tan well, and bright yellow against tan skin is just hot. Yellow has always looked good on brunettes, especially those with really dark hair. They kind of look like sexy bumblebees, but that's alright. Yellow is a great base color for bold patterns such as florals and more eclectic prints.

Fringe AND Denim. It's a fashion two-for!

Denim

Denim is another trend I thought had been ushered out with the 70s. Don't get me wrong, a good pair of blue jeans never goes out of style, but as a fashion trend...TREND? Doesn't matter. Who doesn't love denim? The best thing about it is that no matter what your style, there is a denim out there just waiting for you to claim it as your own.

Whether a comfy pair of Boyfriend jeans is your style or a crop style jean jacket over a maxi dress is more your speed, you're definitely going to find something you like in the denim aisle. Roll the pant legs up for an artistic summer look, paint on a pair of skinny jeans, or put a cute tank under a pair of oversized overalls. It's all good. But beware! Too much denim can have the opposite effect. Remember that pic of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake? Yeah. Don't do that.
