Drag Queen Themed Makeup and Product Collaborations

I have a degree in ancient history and a passion for reading, cooking, DIY projects, tea, science fiction, and a myriad of other subjects.

I love drag queens—their style, sparkle, sass, artistic sensibilities, and most of all, their confidence. As a resident of San Francisco, I've been fortunate enough to see live productions starring drag royalty like Peaches Christ and Bob the Drag Queen, as well as attend local events organized by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a world famous charity and activist group whose organizers consist of gay men dressed as drag versions of Catholic nuns.

My latest obsession is binge-watching RuPaul's Drag Race on Netflix. While watching season 8, I was inspired by Kim Chi's dream to one day start her own cosmetic company. I wondered whether or not she had achieved it, so I turned to Google to find out if any Kim Chi makeup lines existed. While she hasn't started her own cosmetic company (yet), I was pleased to see that she has released two product collaborations with Sugarpill Cosmetics, a liquid lipstick and a pressed eyeshadow.

I became curious about whether or not other queens have inspired, endorsed, co-created, or collaborated on cosmetic lines, so I did some research. Below is a comprehensive list of drag queen products.

1. Kim Chi + Sugarpill Cosmetics

You're in luck if you're looking to buy, girlfriend. Kim Chi's liquid lip color and pressed eyeshadow are still available for purchase. Announced in May of 2016, just days after the grand finale of RuPaul's Drag Race season 8 where Kim Chi was a runner up to the title of America's Next Drag Superstar, the eyeshadow and lip color were released a few months later in September. Both products got good reviews, and the lip color even smells like donuts as an homage to Kim's famous "donut come for me" line from the show.

I couldn't resist trying Kim's products myself. You can see mine in the image above. The colors are beautiful and the liquid lipstick really does smell like donuts.

2. Divine + Kat Von D

The I Am Divine eyeshadow palette and the Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick in Divine are also both still available for sale, but this is an extremely limited release, so it's unlikely they'll be around for long. Launched in February of 2018, Kat Von D describes this homage collection to the late queen as a celebration of self-expression and positivity. The names of each of the shades in the eyeshadow palette were chosen to honor Divine's most iconic performances; Babs, Hard Magic, Baltimore, Waters, Filthy, Pink Flamingo, Female Trouble, and Hairspray.

3. William, Detox, and Vicky Vox + Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

This collection debuted in May of 2013, so readers will have a rough time finding the products for sale, though some might get lucky with online marketplaces like eBay or Poshmark. The collection featured a series of 6 lip tars with matching nail polish. Each of the famous Hollywood queens was featured on the packaging for two shades: William was featured on the ANIME and NSFW shades, Detox on the BLACK DAHLIA and STRUMPET shades, and Vicky Vox on the KAVA KAVA and Grandma shades.

4. RuPaul + Colorevolution

Mama Ru herself has released a line of cosmetics with California-based Colorevolution in November of 2013, and you can still find them for sale! The collection includes a Glamazon unisex fragrance and a Glamazon Limited Edition Gift Set that includes a blush, two pressed eyeshadows, lipgloss, a waterproof eye pencil, a mascara, and a liquid liner.

Sadly, a few of the products are limited edition and are no longer available for sale, though some can still be found for resale on marketplaces like eBay or Poshmark. Hopefully the cult success of past lines will inspire more collabs in the future. I know I can't wait for new products that will help us everyday peasants channel the fierce queens we know and love. I'm here for it!

I lived in DC for almost 10 years and every Halloween there was a high heel drag queen race in Dupont Circle. I went several times and had a lot of fun. I also had the opportunity to meet Divine with a boyfriend who was from Baltimore and see him perform. He was amazing in John Water's films but in person was really something else.
