DIY Beauty: How to Make Lipstick out of Crayons
I enjoy fashion and looking trendy on a budget. I also create art, take photos, and save money by doing things myself.
Just Crayons and Coconut Oil
I fancy myself some colorful lips sometimes. The thing is, I'm not really a makeup person, and I'm not going to spend $10 on a tube of lipstick that I may never wear again.
Here's the good news, you can make lipstick out of crayons! It's easy and inexpensive, and it's pretty good for your lips. Plus, crayons are non-toxic! If they're safe for kids to eat, they're safe for you to put on your lips!

You don't have to use coconut oil. You could use mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or shea butter. It just needs to be something that will make the finished product easier to spread. Coconut oil is really good for moisturizing, and you probably already have some. But if you don't, the other oils listed will do just fine. Use whatever you have on-hand.
Also, you may not even have to use the stove. You could probably warm this junk up in the microwave, but keep a close eye on it. The first time I did this, and I don't know where I got this idea, I was heating up the oil using a big metal spoon over an open flame. Makes me feel kind of like a heroin addict. Or, whatever drug you use spoons for.
Ingredients and Equipment Needed
- Crayon
- Coconut oil
- Water
- Tiny containers—I picked up a bead container at WalMart for under $3.
- Pyrex glass bowl—This type of glass can withstand high heat without cracking. Otherwise the glass may break and you might get stabbed by glass shards!
- Medium-sized pot or saucepan
1. Heat Up Your Water!
While you're prepping the ingredients, start warming up the water. Pour one cup of water in a medium saucepan or pot, and heat on low. You want the water just above simmering but definitely not boiling!
2. Load up Your Mixing Bowl
Choose a crayon color that particularly suits you, and strip that sucker naked. Then, break off about two inches of the crayon and throw it in your mixing bowl. Next, you'll want to add half a teaspoon of coconut oil. Place the bowl in your heated pot of water, but don't let any of the water get into the bowl. The water is only there to heat up the oil and wax gently; so it doesn't burn.

3. Melt the Coconut Oil and Wax
You may want to use a toothpick to stir your melting crayon into the coconut oil. Once the crayon is completely melted and mixed in, CAREFULLY take the bowl out of the pot using pot holders. It will be hot.
4. Pour Your New Lipstick
Pour the contents of your bowl into your tiny container, and let it cool and harden. Once it's cool, it should be easy to spread on your lips.
The good thing about using coconut oil is that it melts sooner than the crayon. This makes your lipstick easy to apply but thick enough that it won't run down your face.
That's all there is to it! It's a fairly easy project. Experiment with colors! All of the ones I used are pictured below.

Wow, this is really neat. I will try this. I may mix as much crayon colors as much as I want. Voted up, etc., shared and bookmarked.
