A-Z Skirt Types
A skirt is a term used in fashion for an item of clothing worn from the waist down. Today, it has become an essential element of any woman’s or girl’s wardrobe and is considered a must-have.
There are many styles of skirts available in all brands. While styles come and go with the seasons, the silhouettes remain the same.
Different Skirt Styles
There are varying skirt lengths and they are:
- Micro: Thigh-length
- Mini: Usually above the knee
- Knee Length: Sits at the knee
- Below the knee: Just below the knee
- Midi: Calf length
- Maxi: Below the calf length
- Ankle Length: Rests at or just above the ankles

A-D Skirt Styles
Accordion Pleats Skirt
- It is a skirt with pleats throughout the skirt and gives a narrow silhouette because of the narrow pleats. It is made to be worn at your true waist and overall looks very classy.
Bell Skirt
- A bell skirt gives a voluminous shape to a person. It has a circular or semi-circular cut that produces a swaying hem.
Casual Style Skirt
- This skirt typically has big side pockets and a buttoned-down front to give a very casual look.
Country Style Skirt
- A country skirt is characterized by a high center pleat and includes side pockets.
Culottes Skirt
- A culotte skirt is a very unique type of skirt and are actually trousers. The front and back of the trousers are made extremely wide to look like a skirt. These skirts are in style these days. You can identify these easily, and many fashion brands carry this style because it looks very chic.
Draped Skirt
- A draped skirt is characterized by soft folds throughout along with a wrap-around skirt effect. It is very elegant and gives a very sophisticated look.

Fit and Flare Skirt
- A fit and flare skirt is narrow at the hips and typically has a gathered fabric panel to mimic a flare attached at the bottom.
Flared Paneled Skirt
- This skirt is extremely narrow at the hips. It is constructed using vertical fabric panels and has a wide hem to give a swinging effect to the skirt.
Flounced Skirt
- Typically, a flounced skirt is a succession of horizontal layers of fabric (called flounces) attached to the skirt to give a flowing effect to the garment.
Frilled Hemline Skirt
- Similar in construction to the fit and flare skirt, a frilled hemline has a ruffled gathered panel of fabric attached to the bottom. Also, unlike the fit and flare skirt which is narrow at the hips, this skirt is generally free at the hips.
Full Skirt
- A full skirt is usually to be worn at the true waist and has a large amount of fabric material attached by the means of gathering on the waist. It is voluminous and gives a flowing movement to the garment.

Godet Skirt
- A godet is a paneled skirt, which means that vertical panels are cut and sown together to construct the skirt. The difference here is that either bell-shaped panels are used or additional material is inserted to the panels to allow the hem to swing out of the skirt.

Handkerchief Hemline Skirt
- A handkerchief hemline skirt that has an asymmetric or uneven flowing hem, made to look like a diagonally hanging handkerchief.
Inverted Pleats Skirt
- This skirt has pleats throughout, but they are inverted, i.e., the pleats are folded towards the inside. The functionality of this skirt is that when you move your legs, the pleats open up to allow room for movement.
Kilt Skirt
- A kilt is a wrap-around skirt characterized by one-sided flat pleats and a check pattern throughout the skirt.
Narrow/Pencil Skirt
- This skirt is narrower at the hem as compared to that on the hips. It allows lesser room for movement of the legs. It is prevalent in formal wear.
Puff Ball Skirt
- A puff ball skirt is narrow on the waist and hem, and in between, the fabric is puffed, made to look like a ball.
Semi-Flared Skirt
- It is a skirt with a wider hem than the waist and the hips, giving it a little flair and comfort to the wearer.
Soft Pleat Skirt
- This skirt is characterized by an un-pressed roll pleat, usually at the center of the garment. It gives comfort to the wearer.

Straight Skirt
- A straight skirt is constructed with two straight panels for the front and back. It gives a slim silhouette to the wearer.
Straight Paneled Skirt
- This skirt is similar to the straight skirt but has multiple panels to construct the front and back instead of just two panels in the straight skirt.
Sun-ray Pleats Skirt
- A sun-ray skirt has pleats throughout the skirt, but they widen as they run down the hem. They are permanently pressed pleats on the skirt, and there can be either fine pleats or broad pleats in the garment.
Tiered Skirt
- This skirt has successive horizontal panels stitched together, and they increase in width as they move towards the hem.
Tiered, Pleated Skirt
- This is a tiered skirt that has pleats throughout the skirt in the panels.
Wrap-around Skirt
- A warp-around skirt is a circular skirt with an open edge tied around the body and fastened typically at the waist.
Yoke Style Skirt
- A yoke style skirt has a horizontal panel, usually attached to the hips, and vertical panels to the hem.

The clothes you wear are fashion: skirts, rugs, shirts, caps, blouses, sweaters, coats and more. Style just doesn't give you a look–it gives you something to throw on, that's either very in nature or more formal style (down shirts with the button, trousers, blazers and a skirt).
